Woodland Elementary School
Weekly Update for the week of January 25 - January 29
As I sat down to write this week's message to all our Elementary Families I looked back and reflected upon what I have shared with families in the past. It seems as if every one of my messages begins with how busy we are at Elementary but I wanted to take a moment and focus on our students and staff this week. Our amazing staff has continued to engage all our students virtually better than I could have dreamed. They put in countless hours and hard work to make each lesson meaningful. And our students are not only getting by this year but learning at a remarkable rate and are excited to "come" to school each day. I love our school community and although the pandemic has certainly given us many challenges I would be remiss to not at least thank our students and staff for all their hard work and efforts this week.
That being said, you guessed it, we have another busy week ahead at Elementary. Our special education staff is returning to work in the building this week ahead of the return date tentatively set for our Phase 1 student pending our Board Meeting on Thursday, January 28. We also are preparing for our next SUpply Pick up slated for February 2-February 4 from 8:00-4:00 with evening hours on Wednesday, February 3 from 5:00-7:00. Separate communication will be sent out later next week pertaining to Supply Pick Up. Classroom teachers may have a slightly modified schedule in the afternoon hours for the upcoming week so please look for further communication from them pertaining to this to accommodate getting everything ready for our Supply Pick Up.
As per Dr. Casey's email, we are busy creating groups for our Hybrid learning student return. I am including a special section below regarding Hybrid learning including medication drop off information, groupings, etc. As we continue to plan for Hybrid learning please keep in mind these plans may change depending on our Board of Education meeting on Thursday.
We will continue to communicate on Fridays as we transition to Hybrid Learning and thank you for your ongoing support in the past and into the future.
Sincerely,
Ryan Wollberg

Hybrid Learning Updates
Hybrid Schedule to begin on Tuesday, February 2
Hybrid Learning Groups
As we have previously explained, the Hybrid Learning model for 1st - 8th grade students require splitting the in-person students into three groups. (Woodland Primary students will continue to follow the AM/PM half-day model). These students will attend school on a three-week rotation. One week of the rotation will be in person (full days), and the other two weeks in the rotation will be remote learning. All groups of students are virtual on ROAR Mondays. The in-person Hybrid Learning students will be divided into three groups based on Parent/Guardian last name as it appears in Skyward Family Access.
BLUE group: A - GOM
GREEN group: GON - ORT
YELLOW group: OSM - ZZZ
The number of students selecting in-person Hybrid Learning varies greatly from class to class. In some cases, the school principal and teacher may need to move your student to another group. We will not move a student to another group if they have siblings to keep all family members in the same group. This will impact very few students and you will be contacted individually should it be necessary to change your child’s group. Once we have a finalized transition calendar following the Board of Education meeting, you will look for your child’s group and grade level to determine when they will begin their in-person schedule.
Medication Drop Off
Help us be ready to keep your child to stay safe and healthy by the first day of in-person school!
Drop off the medications your child needs to take while in school beginning Monday, January 25. To limit contact we ask that you please adhere to the following procedures. When you arrive to the building, please let our office staff know that you are there to drop off supplies for our health office. Once you are let in there will be the following in each foyer at East and West:
- A labeled box for medications.
- A labeled bin for the med drop off sheets that parents have to sign.
- A small bin for the physical and immunizations sheets.
Bring your child's non-expired and labeled medications with the updated forms:
- Asthma Action Plan with a quick-acting inhaler and spacer/chamber
- Food Allergy and Anaphylaxis Emergency Care Plan with EpiPen and Benadryl
- Medication Authorization Forms for any other medicines, including any over-the-counter medicines such as Tylenol, Motrin, ointments, or any cough drops
The forms have been provided by the Health Office and available on the District Website under Health Services.
If your child is has a missing physical and immunization as you have been contacted by the Health Office, bring a current physical with immunization record to the school before the first day of in-person learning. Illinois State Board of Education requires these forms for your child to be able to attend in-person (Hybrid) learning.

Social Emotional Resources
In light of recent events, please see below for some resources on how to talk to your child about the events of this past week
This week we will look at the resources circled in the visual. If you missed it last week, please first click on the link on the whiteboard to find a letter explaining the calming corner and offering the contact information for your student’s school social worker. Next, click on the image of the Zones of Regulation poster to be taken to a document with a series of visuals that help teach students about the emotions that belong to each zone and the calming strategies students can use based on the zone they are in. For more information about the Zones of Regulation, please reach out to your student’s school social worker.
Please also take a few minutes to explore the different resources found on the bookshelf. You will find a variety of videos demonstrating breathing strategies, yoga routines, and mindfulness practices that will help students be ready to learn. Have some fun while practicing these! It is best to practice calming strategies when students are regulated so they are familiar when a student is struggling with strong emotions.
If you have any questions about the virtual calming corner or the resources available, please don’t hesitate to contact your student’s teacher or social worker!
