2021-2022 School Calendar
Class of 2029 leaving HV to go to CMS
4th Grade Send-Off
It's always emotional saying good-bye to the 4th graders who will be leaving Hope Valley School for CMS. Although, I am happy for them and their accomplishments it also leaves an empty place in my heart. These kids are a special bunch. I have watched them grow since kindergarten and even some longer who were in the HV pre-school. I wish these children nothing but the very best as they make their way through the next phase of schooling. My advice to the children is to 1) continue soaring, 2) continue boldly stepping forward, 3) continue to be who you are, and 4) continue treating all with dignity and respect. My hope is that next year and the years that follow be as phenomenal as the years in elementary school have been. Congratulations to the class of 2029! I am so very proud of them and what they accomplished the last 5 years.
On Tuesday, the 4th graders were in the gym with Mr. G. I shared my thoughts over the last 5+ years, students read their favorite memory at Hope Valley School, and the teachers gave them a certificate and picture of themselves in front of our Hope Valley School sign. They are now CMS bound! Please click the link below to view the recording. Grab some popcorn and enjoy the show.

Summer Learning
All the information for summer reading and summer math will be enclosed in the report card envelope on the last day of school. Please encourage your child to complete the summer math and summer reading sheets. I cannot express how important it is to keep your children engaged in learning during the summer months. Even for 10-15 mins a couple times a week goes a long way.
Summer Reading
I strongly encourage you to have your child set reading goals this summer in our summer reading challenge to keep his/her reading skills intact and avoid the summer slide. Click HERE to access the summer reading form. These can also be found on our webpage at https://hopevalley.chariho.k12.ri.us/.
Math Options:
1. Summer Math Menu
- Complete 2-3 activities each week from the MATH MENU below. Spend at least 15 minutes on math activities and record on the Math Log.
- A select number of students will have access to Zearn this summer and into next year. This is an amazing free opportunity to get extra reinforcement and practice so children are ready to enter next year. Thanks to a RIDE grant, our school received 75 licenses for students to complete Zearn over the summer. If you received a letter in the report card envelope, you can complete Zearn instead of the summer math menu if you prefer and you can track your Zearn minutes as well.
Other Summer News
Sign Up for Bus Transportation for 2021-2022
- Please consider signing up your child(ren) for the bus next year. Our parent pick up line is getting way too long. Next year, parent pick-ups will look different (possibly like we have done previously) and as you know parking is quite difficult and congested at the school. With that said, I want to remind parents that bus routes are created to safely transport students to and from school. We ask that parents/guardians register for transportation services in the summer. Parents can go to the District web site and complete a registration form. Alternately, if you need a hard copy or the form, please call the school to get a copy.
Class Placements
- As we have always done in the past, we do not accept parent requests for teachers. A ton of work goes into creating class lists. At this time, class placements are complete. Like we did in previous years and due to potential (and likely) changes in enrollment and staffing over the summer, classroom teacher assignments (district-wide) will be mailed to families mid-August. At that time, you will receive a welcome letter from your new teacher.
Have a Spectacular and Safe Summer Break!
Class Plays from Mr.s Abbott and Mrs. Z
Click on the links below for the Kindergarten and 3rd grade plays virtual style. What a great show. Always so entertaining.
Mrs. Abbott's 3 Little Pigs Video - Every year Mrs. Abbott's class always does an amazing rendition of the 3 Little Pigs. This year the play was turned into a video.
Mrs. Z's American Revolution Video - In third grade, students learn about our government and how citizens in communities work together. They also learn about our Founding Fathers and how their vision for a new country shaped the way we live today. Every year they perform a play about how America won our independence from Britain. Due to restrictions this year, they have created a video instead of a play, beginning with the Boston Tea Party and ending with the writing of the Constitution.

MESSAGE 2: 4th to 5th Grade Summer Reading
Dear Parents/Guardians:
Have you ever heard of the summer reading slide? It is estimated that the summer reading slide accounts for about 80% of the gap in reading achievement by 9th grade. Summer break is blamed for students losing anywhere from one to three months of instruction. This can add up over the years, leaving students far behind where they should be. So, what can you do to prevent this from happening to your child? Encourage your child to read! Studies have shown that students who are encouraged to pick a book that will challenge and interest them will beat the summer slide and continue to make gains in their education. Try these tips:
- Visit the public library for free access to a variety of books and ebooks.
- Ask your child to tell you about what they are reading. What corrections do they have to the text?
- Encourage your child to read out loud to you.
- Read out loud to your child. Studies have shown that even older students still enjoy being read to!
Encourage your child to read and they will return to school more confident in their reading skills, more motivated to read beyond what is required, and more excited about reading!
Chariho Middle School requires your child to read 2 books over the summer. Book recommendations are attached, but students are encouraged to read any book that matches their interests and challenges them! Students must complete a book project for each book to receive credit for summer reading. Students should bring projects in on the first day of school. Project options and criteria can be found on the CMS library summer reading page (see directly below for the link).
Students who successfully complete two summer reading projects will attend a grade level celebration at the end of September. Your assistance is crucial in supporting academic rigor and achievement at Chariho Middle School. Your time and effort in helping your child complete their summer reading requirements are appreciated. Thank you in advance for making the summer reading program a success!
