Units of Study Information
The first semester units have been revised and sent to print shop. Buildings can expect the following items within the next week:
- First quarter binders, including curriculum and optional daily lesson plans, and resources
- Updated second quarter units to replace 2014-2015 unit plans
- Formative Assessment Opportunities within daily plans highlighted as potential data points
- Bulleted ideas for Content Grading Opportunities (3rd-5th)
Other Units News
The K-3 revised units will stay the same the next couple of years. The units for 4th & 5th grades receive final revision 2015-2016 school year.

Assessments
The unit assessments look differently for the 2015-2016 school year. There will be a quarterly summative writing assessment and a reading benchmark assessment 1st grade through fifth grade.
Currently, there is an in-house reading assessment created, however there is a possibility of having an online standardized assessment. The Assessment Committee is working on the plan for next year and seeking potential outside source vendors for a reading benchmark assessment.

New Spectra Curriculum
New Spectra Curriculum has been written, approved, and will be implemented next year.
· 1st Grade Topics: Students will participate in a STEM unit exploring and discussing the field of agriculture engineering and the role of insects in the natural system of pollination. Students will learn about the Engineering Design process and various creative thinking tools.
· 2nd Grade Topics: Balance of Nature; Children of the World Students will complete two units in 2nd grade Spectra. They will research the balance of nature and multiculturalism. In each unit they will be presented a real world problem to solve. Through their research they will write about their findings, and use digital aides to present their solutions to those problems.
· 3rd Grade Topics: Games, Space, Rube Goldberg Students will complete three units in 3rd grade Spectra. They will research the topics of their units and create a game, space colony, and Rube Goldberg machine. Using feedback from peers, adults, and global audience students will improve their creations prior to presenting their product.
· 4th Grade Topics: Navigation, Bridges, Rocketry Students will complete three units in 4th grade Spectra. They will research the topics including how the area has changed historically and impacted our world today. In each unit they will learn about developing quality persuasive techniques to convince an audience to fund their projects.
· 5th Grade Topics: Bio mimicry, Architecture, Engineering Design Process (Water Island) Students will complete three units in 5th grade Spectra. In each unit they will learn about the components of a quality documentary. While researching the topics of the units they will create a documentary of their learning, along with their ability to creatively, critically, and collaboratively solve.
