Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ February 22, 2019
From Mrs. Wohlfiel, Interim Principal
Most, if not all of us, realize the value of feedback. If you would Google “the importance of feedback” you would get about 2,500,000,000 results in 0.60 seconds. (That’s what I just did.) One site (www.engineersjournal.ie) states feedback “helps learners to maximise their potential” and it “raise(s) their awareness of strengths and areas for improvement” as well as “identify actions to be taken to improve performance.” And plenty of times, the feedback makes us feel really good inside because our hard work, or that of our children, is paying off and people are noticing!
Hearing and providing feedback is imperative to moving forward. We want all learners to find success! I hope that you found the time to attend our conferences last night or plan to meet with your child(ren)’s teacher(s) next Thursday from 3:00 to 7:30 p.m. to discuss feedback concerning your child(ren)’s experience at Stone Bank School.
In the last newsletter I mentioned our mission. The team this past summer also worked on creating our strategic plan which included our District Vision Statement:
Honoring the history of our community while empowering lifelong learners to find success by authentically embracing the joys and challenges of life.
Stone Bank is a mix of students who are attending our school as a third or maybe even fourth generation attendee and new families. Just last week at our 4K and new 5K registration night, a family shared that their child would be the third generation attending here! There were also families in attendance that were new to the district. It is this historic blending with the new that enriches our community as we move forward, empowering lifelong learners. As we learn about the joys and challenges of the lives of our students, especially in their academic lives, we must embrace what we learn through feedback.
Thank you to all of the families and staff for their flexibility with attending school this past Monday. In case Mother Nature has any more crazy winter weather planned, the school board determined that Monday, April 22, will be our next snow make-up day IF we need it. At this time we do not have to make up a full day for all of our students, but if we should, it will the April 22, just like Arrowhead High School.
Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores will be sent to all families Monday via Skyward. Beth Wartzenluft’s blog will help to explain the understanding of a MAP score - it is more than just looking at the one number. I would kindly and highly encourage the reading of her blog post before looking at the MAP scores to assist with a better understanding of what the data is meant to represent.
Yesterday morning the Student Council hosted their monthly Bagels with Buds. Kudos to the student council members who arrived at school early to set up and prepare the bagels and hot chocolate and to all of those who purchased items! If you missed it, the next one is March 21. The Student Council also made blankets for Project Linus this past week! The children and families at Children’s Hospital will appreciate your time and kindness.
Next week starts the AMSAC boys basketball tournaments. Best of luck to our 5th and 6th grade teams who are participating at Merton and North Lake respectively. The following week we are hosting the 7th grade tournament. The 8th grade tournament will be held at North Shore Middle School. Make Stone Bank proud!
Next Thursday we are hosting The Choral Festival! Middle School choirs from Swallow, Richmond and Lake Country will arrive with knowledge of the musical pieces and a clinician will rehearse throughout the day to assist with the polishing of the songs. The goal is to perform a concert at 1:00 p.m. An additional highlight of the day is when one of Arrowhead’s choirs will present a short concert for the students attending the festival.
Four teams are in the midst of preparing for The National Fluid Power Association Fluid Power Action Challenge hosted at Waukesha County Technical College. Teams of students design and build a machine powered by Fluid Power and ultimately participate in a timed competition on March 15, 2019. This year our teams consist of Ben Bamba, Sam Rehm, Nelson Rehm, Asher Conigliaro, Evan Riemenschneider, Finn Myers, Ty Malison, Charlie Merck, Signe Warwick, Sydney Mikulak, Sara DeBord, Cora Arnold, Liliana Kureck, Lily Puetzer, Rachel Reidy, and Miranda Knuth.
One last item - the parking lot and drop off. We have noticed a little improvement in following the expectations of the drop off routine. There is still room for improvement. If you have different family members dropping off, please ensure they are familiar with the expectations. We all need to keep the safety of our students in the forefront. Thank you to those of you who are helping to ensure our students arrive safely.
Have a great weekend!

Noetic Learning Math Contest
April 4th, Stone Bank School students Grades 2-6 will participate in the National Noetic Learning Math Contest as part of our gifted and talented programming. Students who are independent and would like to compete in the contest will take a written test and submit their answers online. Students who are not competing spend the hour with me solving the same problems together in the classroom. We have a lot of fun with our dry erase boards, manipulatives, and group conversations.
To prepare our students for problem solving, we have a team of middle school math leaders who present a Noetic Learning POW (Problem of the Week). Students at each grade level are encouraged to try the problems. In 5th grade, we have initiated a weekly workshop with the 6 problem solving strategies in addition to the POW.
Top scores in each grade level as well as the top 10% of scores nationwide are awarded medals.
Check out a Noetic Math Video (similar problem-solving techniques as learned in class) with your child:
