CDS - First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Feb 24–Feb 28, 2020
Hello First Program Community,
Thank you for your patience, understanding and support last week as we began our second week of e-learning. I am proud of the collaboration that took place amongst our faculty. I am proud of the response from our wonderful CDS community. Parents are trying their best to support their children at home, and we thank you for that. The challenges vary from family to family, and we value your feedback, as it guides us in ways to improve learning for your child.
This Thursday, March 5th, all classes PK-4 will have a revised timetable that we will aspire to follow. This will assist with learning at home in allowing the students and parents to know a regular timetable.
For now, students from PK and K can expect to each receive three learning assignments per day for a total of fifteen per week. There will be one specialist subject per day. There will be two homeroom subjects per day.
Grades 1234 can expect to each receive four learning assignments per day for a total of twenty per week. There will be one (or two) specialist subjects each day. There will be three (or two) homeroom subjects per day.
We will share timetables grade by each grade about which subjects will be offered on which days.
Students who have left Korea for other countries are expected to follow through with the learning outlined by their teachers in their respective distance learning plans. Students who've left Korea should reach out to their teachers individually and make arrangements if they are unable to effectively engage in e-learning.
Online etiquette is a big concern for us. We want to be certain that the students are being safe and respectful as they participate in their online learning. As such, please abide by the following:
- Uniform: we ask that all students wear a Dalton top—a shirt or jacket—during their e-learning: white polo, blue polo, jacket, hoodie; whatever you like. But please, not your pajamas!
- You can login to Seesaw each day at 9am and expect to see your learning assignments for the day.
- It is recommended that you are learning from 9am–12pm, and completing all work between 8am–4pm, the same as school hours. But we of course acknowledge that this will not be possible for everyone. Some parents will be at work during those hours and will begin supporting students with assignments in the evening. Every family will approach e-learning in their own unique way, and we respect that.
I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. We really miss you all and look forward to seeing you digitally throughout the week, and physically in the near future when we return!
Educationally Yours,
Mr. Hill
Director of First Program

Congratulations to Ms. Minot! She welcomed her new baby into her family, beginning her maternity leave on Wednesday. Ms. Drews has taken over the lead role in Grade 3 while Ms. Lopez takes over as the Assistant Teacher (in grade 3 and beyond).
Ms. Choo did a fantastic job with the planning and facilitating of Book Week. Well done, Ms. Choo!
Welcome to Ms. Marina Lopez
Hello FP Community!
I am Ms. Lopez. As many of you already know, I am the Spanish teacher and I will also be the Grade 3 Assistant Teacher during Ms. Minot's maternity leave.
I am very happy to help as much as I can and I hope that the students enjoy these experiences as much as I am sure I will.
Let me introduce myself: I was born in Spain, in a little town near the Mediterranean sea. Among my hobbies are reading, doing sport and crafts but my main hobby is cooking, especially Spanish dishes.
FP Charitable Giving
Sabrin’s birthday is in July, she likes to spend her time reading, and she wants to be a doctor when she grows up!
We look forward to sharing more with you as FP's relationship with Sabrin progresses.
In the Spotlight
This week we are showcasing Drama and Art.
Drama with Ms. Stant
Another incredible term is coming to an end, here in FP at CDS. The Drama students in Grade 1 and Grade 2 have been hard at work to prepare their upcoming plays: The Girl Who Cried Wolf (Grade 1) and Stone Soup (Grade 2). This term’s plays follow a theme of morality, commonly known children’s stories and fables. These tales have twists on the famous stories that are sure to keep the audience entertained until the end.
Grade 1 has been practicing movement and pantomime techniques throughout the term as they have learned to portray sheep, shepherds, and many other characters on stage.
Grade 2 has continued developing their characterization skills from the holiday show, The Gingerbread Girl, as they are playing various villager roles in this production. The students have been focusing not only on characterization, but also on plot development and memorization as well.
Art with Mr. Read
First grade art students learned about larger-than-life sculptures of everyday objects made by Pop artist Claes Oldenburg. Students discussed why they thought some art objects and artifacts are valued more than others. Some students said it is because of the size. Other students said they are valuable because they are in museums. Then, students learned how to use forms like a cylinder and cone to create larger-than-life paper mache sculptures of a familiar object to them—their pencils!

High School Senior Project- Multiculturalism
This week, we had special guests visiting Grade 4 classrooms to teach students about Multiculturalism. Two high school students, Elizabeth and Yejin, will be visiting G4s twice to promote open-mindedness toward culturally different groups. This lesson is a great addition to House SEL!
Book Week
On Monday, FP kicked off its annual Book Week with Author Visit Day. Although visiting author David Greenberg wasn’t able to join us in person as originally planned, he gave a presentation via Skype from Hong Kong and the students were thoroughly entertained by his funny poems.
For Reading Buddies Day, middle and high school students read books with PK and K. Grades 1 to 4 read books to animal reading buddies including 1 cat, 1 hamster, 1 snail, 1 aquarium containing fish and shrimp, 2 turtles, 4 marimo balls, and 5 dogs. Thanks to the parents who came with the animals!
Book Character Day was a fun day for students to dress up as one of their favorite book characters. It’s always great to see the creative costumes that students are wearing!
On Global Readers Day, students traveled around the library to visit 10 different countries and hear stories in various languages such as Korean, English, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Chinese, and French. Thank you to the 25 parents and teachers who volunteered to read to the students!
The week concluded with another successful annual Book Swap in the grade 4 classroom. Hope everyone had fun reading and celebrating books this week!
Book swap
On Friday the students were able clean out their home libraries and add some new books! All week students brought in books they wanted to trade for new ones. The fourth graders worked very hard preparing for the book swap! They made posters and organized the 4th grade classroom into a library! On Friday everyone had lots of fun swapping their books for some fresh reads! Great job FP!
