KENILWORTH JUNIOR HIGH
Orientation Edition
Welcome Back, Kolts!
Hello Kenilworth Families,
Welcome to the 2020-21 school year! I am your Principal, Bennett Holley, and I hope you had a wonderful summer. Mr. Ortlinghaus, your Assistant Principal, and I are very excited to start the new academic school year. Many of you are wondering what the Kenilworth Junior High School orientation will look like during the COVID-19 experience; therefore, this message is intended to provide some clarity. Please keep in mind everything is subject to change, but our goal is to offer a drive-through experience similar to our typical orientation. The rationale for attending orientation is to ensure students are prepared for the first day of school, even during distance learning. You can help ensure the car line continues moving by attending orientation during your family's assigned time slot. The following is the timeline of orientation attendance based upon the student’s last name and grade level.
Wednesday- August 5th- Seventh Grade
Thursday- August 6th- Eighth Grade
8:00 - 9:00 a.m.- A through C
9:00 - 10:00 a.m.- D through F
10:00 - 11:00 a.m.- G through J
11:00 - 12:00 p.m.- K through M
12:00 - 12:30 p.m.- KJHS Employee Lunch Break
12:30 - 1:30 p.m.- N through R
1:30 - 2:30 p.m.- S through Z
Be prepared! Make sure you are ready for orientation!
The best way to make sure you are ready for orientation is to go through our Orientation Expectations Guide as we have gone paperless! Within the document, you will find the most current orientation information and forms that need to be completed. (Completed online that is...paper copies of the forms will not be collected at orientation.) Additionally, you will be able to buy anything being sold at orientation, while also donating to our amazing PTSA! (PE clothes will not be sold until in-person instruction begins.) Cash payments will not be accepted at orientation due to the employee health guidelines. Items like the Kolt planner must be purchased between now and August 4th. Anything purchased after August 4th will not be available for pick-up at orientation. Any returning PCS students who have a district-issued iPad (mostly 8th grade students) need to bring their iPad and charger to return to our technology department in order to receive a new Chromebook device.
Where to go to start the orientation process-
As previously mentioned, we are conducting a drive through orientation. As you can imagine, this means there will be a lot of cars coming onto our campus. To divert the school traffic off of Riesling road, our drive through set up begins next to our gym, off the Dover street entrance. We will be utilizing the blacktop area behind our school. Take a look at our Orientation Map 20/21 to have a better idea of the traffic flow.
Drive through safety expectations-
Students and parents are expected to wear masks and will remain in their cars throughout the entire drive-through orientation with one exception. At the end of the drive-through process, two students at a time will be allowed to exit their vehicle to have their photos taken by Lifetouch. These are the photos that are added to Aeries and also populate the yearbook. The photos will be taken outside, and social distancing protocols will be followed. Students who exit their car will follow arrows to the photo area and will then meet back up with their parents as they pull forward. Take a look at the Photo Detail Map for a visual regarding the traffic expectations. If parents don’t want their child to have their photo taken, then they exit directly onto Riesling road.
Items to be distributed during orientation-
Schedules- Paper copies of student’s schedules will be distributed. If you have a question about your student’s classes, please contact your student’s counselor.
7th Grade Counselor- Tanya Trimble, ttrimble@petk12.org
8th Grade Counselor- Keith Cameron, kcameron@petk12.org
Planners- Student planners are available for pick up if purchased before August 4th. Even though we are starting school in distance learning, planners remain an excellent tool for helping students stay organized.
Math Packets- 7th and 8th graders will pick up a math packet to begin their mathematics studies on the first day of school, August 12th.
Chromebooks- All students within PCS receive an electronic device. Students will be picking up brand new 2-in-1 Chromebooks this year! We encourage families to purchase the Chromebook insurance, available online within the Orientation Expectations Guide. Returning 8th-grade students are expected to return their iPad and charger to receive the new Chromebook.
Photos- Lifetouch will be providing photo opportunities while practicing social distancing. Students need to dress appropriately.
We look forward to seeing you!
We very much look forward to seeing our wonderful students and their families. Please be patient with us as we have never attempted a drive through orientation set up before. We promise to do our best to keep the car line moving. Take care of yourselves and GO KOLTS!
We look forward to seeing you!
