Media is mass of communicating through news, entertainment, radio, television, newspaper, movies, magazines, internet, etc. Media reaches and influences people much faster in this time of life, because of technology. Media used to be called press until late 1950. There are different kinds of media like mass and social. Media has connected the world in so many ways. Media is not always positive either. When only mass media existed, people with power were able to control societies through media, telling them stories through the news that has not been true. Today part of the control has been lost, because the internet has given people a way to voice their opinions. Information is not as filtered as it once was, because can spread lies and there’s nothing that can be done about it. Media has changed the way people act and view the world, distances has been shortened, and new possibilities has been open to societies. Media literacy is the makes it available to access, analyze, evaluate and create media. Media literacy skills are included in educational standards like; language arts, social studies, health, science, and other subject. To be able to be considered media literate, you have to be able to understand the messages you’re receiving from what you’re looking at. To be media literate doesn’t mean you have to memorize facts about the media, but to learn to raise the right questions about what you’re watching, seeing, and hearing. An author named Len Masterman calls this ability “critical autonomy.”

What can I do ? Smore #2

Fighting for LGBT equality is a tough topic. Many people are not conformable with the having a conversation about gay people, because they don’t really understand it. They don't understand how or why. The best way to try to understand a topic is to get informed about it. Once you are informed about, you now have a better understanding and can sympathize with how they feel on a day to day. Ways that I can stop hate towards LGBT's are, if I see it happening don't just stand back and let it happen, say something. The number one way to stop a cycle of something is you have to stand up and stop it. I should not be afraid what people are going to think of me for sticking up for the right thing. There are numerous foundations out about supporting the LGBT communities that I could be involved in, as much as going on different blogs and reading about them. Sharing it with others so they can be aware. People are also so stuck in their ways and thoughts on how things are typically, they don't like change. These are defiantly steps that I can take to to change this issue in the world.

Smore #3 Welcome to Super Bowl 50 (Precis)

The Snickers Super Bowl commercial (2016), claims that women are less grumpy when they have eaten. The company used the snickers bar to betray the food. The company is stating in order to get a women to cooperate bribe her with food. The company switched roles and got a man to play Marilyn Monroe, and was complaining about the wind but was happy suddenly after she ate the snickers bar.

How do you see advertising... Smore #4

Advertising is a form of promotion that is delivered through selected media outlets that, require the marketer to pay for message placement. Advertising has been viewed over the years as a method of mass promotion in that a single message can reach a large number of people. In the history, advertising has been a form of marketing communication where the message receiver does not immediately respond to the message. Different ways of advertising can be through social media; billboards on the highways and interstates, television commercials, websites, blogs, Instagram, twitter, Facebook, and radio stations. Advertising has an impact on society because it promotes values that relate to humans well beings and environmental sustainability. They influences people’s brain and persuade them into why they need the product. Advertising reflects both societal values and dictate them sometimes. For example those animal shelters commercials, they show people that mistreated animals are really affected by animal cruelty by their sad faces and tries to influence people to adopt one of the pets to give them a loving home. Also there are advertising that dictate society like the Dove commercial, which basically was about you run like a girl, fight, and act like a girl.

Media manipulates... Smore #5

Some examples of commercials that have done the opposite of what you would expect to advertise their product would be commercials like; pants that tighten your stomach(skinny jeans), creams that take away stretch marks(Palmer’s cocoa butter formula), and injections that take 10 years off your face(Botox). These are some of the advertising claims intriguing our desires for six-pack abs, firm thighs, and flawless skin. Hypocrisy in advertising has become normal. In general, people false advertise. In advertising it’s normal people telling you not to do something because this is what happens if you do, but they do it on a daily basis. For example, they will have a famous person on a makeup commercial, talking about Maybellene and that person doesn’t even wear make up on a daily basis. The Dove commercial really stuck out to me. When the interviewer asked boys and girls to betray girls in running, fighting, playing sports the first couple betrayed girls as if they were wimpy. Then they asked the little boy what he thought about girls and said his opinion but tried to exclude his sister but she’s a girl. I don’t think people mean any harm by hypocrisy but it has become so normal to do. It’s a bad habit that needs to be broken.

Should Apple Fix? Smore #6

As being citizens of the United States we have freedom to almost do or say anything we want, if it is not against the law. Also we have the right to keep what is valuable to us secure. I am willing to sacrifice my freedom for safety, because if you aren’t safe, freedom is pointless. After everything happening with 9/11 and Isis, that was reassuring to me that I would like the government to do whatever means necessary to not let situations similar to those, recur. Apple should be able to let the government search through people’s phone for safety. In the first article, if apple would have let the prosecutors search through the shooters phone to see who they were communicating with, those 14 people would still be alive. In the second article, I understand Apple wants to protect their customers privacy, but if this will stop shootings and terrorist attacks, I’m all for it.

Agree or Disagree? Smore #7

I am writing about the statement,” Society would be safer if we had security cameras in public places to catch potential criminals”, I strongly disagree with this statement. Right now in society, we already have cameras in; malls, grocery stores, banks, schools, etc. People are still committing crimes. Schools are still getting shot up. Banks are still getting robbed. Churches are still getting broken in to and so are, malls and grocery stores. The problem is, people don’t fear law enforcement anymore. It’s absorb to add cameras in public places like dressing rooms and bathrooms and cars, because thats really the only things left. Adding more cameras in certain places isn't going to fix the problem, it’s going to piss people off. I would feel extremely degraded and disrespected, coming from a girls point of view if the government added cameras in bathrooms. That’s just a boundary you don’t cross. It’s one thing to want to be a to go through my phone for surveillance, I can live with that. I ultimately think the government or police system need to figure out another to catch criminals like having a cop car on every block. In reality I think it’s too late to try to anything else because most people are not afraid of the government so they are going to do whatever they want regardless. It’s been going on for way to long to try to make people afraid .

"Trump refuses to denounce the KKK."

— PolitiFact Nevada

Trump said this quote on Wednesday, March 9th, 2016 in the Conservative Solutions PAC ad. Florida’s upcoming winner-take-all Republican primary is increasingly seen as the anti-Donald Trump faction’s last hope to stop the New York billionaire’s march to the nomination. Numerous outside groups and super PACs are flooding the state’s airwaves with anti-Trump ads, including one tying him to the KKK.

Bernie Sanders says he consistently beats Donald Trump by bigger margins than Hillary Clinton does”

Bernie Sanders said this on Sunday, March 6th, 2016 in a Democratic presidential debate in Flint, Mich. On the numbers, Sanders is right. He runs stronger against Trump than Clinton in six of the seven national head-to-head polls since Jan. 1. However, polling experts say such results should be taken with a grain of salt, since polls taken well before the start of the general-election contest have historically not been very accurate predictors of the November results.

“Marco Rubio Says Donald Trump hired illegal workers "from Poland and he had to pay a million dollars or so in a judgment."

Marco Rubio said this on Thursday, February 25th, 2016 in the GOP primary debate in Texas.Florida Sen. Marco Rubio charged Republican presidential frontrunner Donald Trump with hypocrisy for hiring undocumented immigrants for his real estate projects instead of American citizens.

I found some interesting quotes between the political party going back and forth between each other. It is important to research important to research the legitimacy of the candidates because people are known for twisting other peoples words. Most people don't fact check their candidates. We cannot rely on the media to tell the truth because people could say anything. The problem with not looking up the truth is rumors get spreaded that way.

Smore #9 Aint Rebellion Fine

One of the most pernicious allegations made against the African-American people was that our slave ancestors were either exceptionally “docile” or “content and loyal,” thus explaining their purported failure to rebel extensively. Some even compare enslaved Americans to their brothers and sisters in Brazil, Cuba, Suriname and Haiti, the last of whom defeated the most powerful army in the world, Napoleon’s army, becoming the first slaves in history to successfully strike a blow for their own freedom. Underground resistance movements developed in approximately 100 ghettos in Nazi-occupied eastern Europe, especially in Poland, Lithuania, Belorussia, and the Ukraine. Their main goals were to organize uprisings, break out of the ghettos, and join partisan units in the fight against the Germans. Jews seized what weapons they could find—picks, axes, and some firearms stolen from the camp armory—and set fire to the camp. About 200 managed to escape. The Germans recaptured and killed about half of them. And say, finally, whether peace is best preserved by giving energy to the government, or information to the people. The last is the most certain, and the most legitimate engine of government. Educate and inform the whole mass of the people. Enable them to see that it is their interest to preserve peace and order, and they will preserve them...They are the only sure reliance for the preservation of our liberty.

There are multiple similarities between Edward and Winston. They are both men working for a party that promised them a certain part of safety and a limited amount of well being if they toe the line. They were both set on spying and changing history on behalf of a Big Brother and both of them rebelled against him. Winston and Snowden act alone. They are both no action hero. Winston Smith and Edward Snowden are ordinary guys. But they had access to what we do not have access to, and came to believe that the job they were doing was not ordinary but extraordinary, and was not only wrong, but pointless. They did not know why they were doing it, or for whom, other than for security itself – a dead and pointless thing locked inside dead and pointless lives.

Technology has defiantly progressed over the years. We went from tv being only in black and white and only having a few channels, to now showing in color and having unlimited channels. Also only being able To hear important news or gossip on radios to just being able to pick up your smart Phone or go on the computer to hear or see these things. With these things ,everything is more convenient to access. With the new inventions that we have, yes we have more as an advantage in a way but it makes us more lazy. We dont have To work as hard now. For example, if we needed help with finding an answer for homework, all we would have to do is put it into Google and 99.9% the answer would be there. But back then they would have to actually go through the text and see other problems worked out and compare it to what you're actually looking for. With all the new technology that get's added each year , we should also take the time to actually figure some things out without technology.

Happiness is how is a combination on how satisfied with your life. Freedom is the right to act, speak, or think whatever you want without restraint. True happiness is the feeling of freedom. Listening to your own inner voice and trusting your choices will lead you to a life of happiness. When it comes to freedom it’s not easy. It would mean you would have to state your opinions or beliefs no caring the punishment it might lead to. You would have to be strong minded and not afraid. The easiest one to choose would be happiness, because you are going with the flow, and also ok with being mediocre or not having a voice. I agree with Winston, I would choose happiness because it wouldn't start chaos. I see a lot of people in society today choosing happiness as well, because they are scared of being denied in what they believe in,

Gaslighting means to manipulate someone by psychological means into questioning their own sanity. It is a tactic used to destabilize your understanding of reality, making you constantly doubt your own experiences. Most of the time, this is used to uneven power balances with abusive partners, making you second guess yourself when you feel as if you are being abused or attacked. This relates closely to mental abuse. When politicians make up fake stories about the other opponent or bring up things from their past, that is a form of gaslighting.

Smore #14 Part 1

Modern technology enables us to connect to anyone in the world whenever we want. As technology is increasing it is getting harder and harder to get people to interact with each other. Technology was built to connect us, but now we are more disconnected than ever. Constantly being on machinery type things is affecting our ability to connect with our lives and the people around us in it. It is one thing to be grateful for the technology we have today but it is something completely different when you over use technology and become lazy.

To ensure this epidemic doesn’t become a permanent reality, we would to draw a fine line between when we need to use technology and when we can figure out things technology. Also people need to accept that we ALL have a problem constantly over using technology, and not only accept fix it. We should able to walk from our car to a store without needed to have our phones in our faces. We have to learn how to enjoy our free time without it, we have to learn to do things by ourselves. A couple of things you can try to set limits to over using technology, and finally have the control over when and how much you decide to use it would be limiting to two times per day getting on; snapchat, facebook, twitter, instagram, and texting. You can turn off your phone from time to time during the day. We can’t control social media because it has become a part of us, but we can control what we put on the internet and control what we choose to spread. I’m definitely going to apply this to my daily problem because i didn’t really realize it was a problem until writing this paper and I need to better myself in this situation.
