Plate Tectonics
Joel Velasco 1/22/15 6th period
#1
Alfred Wagner saw that the west coast of Africa and the east coast of S.A. fit together like pieces of a puzzle.
#2
People didn't believe Wegener because it was something new that they didn't think was possible.
#3
Two scientists that supported Wegener were Alexander Du Toit, whose evidence was the similarity of the fossils of Africa & South America, and Emile Argand, whose evidence was the folded and buckled strata in the Swiss Alps.
#4
Divergent, Convergent, and Transform.
#5
Plates separating=Trenches/faults,earthquake Plates colliding=Volcanoes,Mountains and earthquakes Plates sliding against each other=Faults, canyons, and earthquakes.
#6
The west coast of United States.
#7
The both have the convergent process.
#8
The rocks off the East coast of North America are very old compared to the rocks along the Mid-Atlantic ridge.
#9
This is because the sea floor is spreading where oceanic plates are separating.
#10
Convection currents are heat currents from the mantle that go in a circular motion that is caused by heating and cooling.
#11
The North America, Eurasian, Indo-Australian, Pacific, Antarctic, South America, and African Plates
#12
Two negative events that happen as a direct result of plate tectonics are volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
#13
These events happened at a convergent boundary.
#14
Three good things that happen because of plate tectonics are fertile soil, ore deposits, and fossil fuels.
#15
Fertile soils happen because of weathering of igneous rocks. Ore deposits happen when, during an volcanic eruption instead of magma coming out & reaching the surface, it slowly cools underneath the volcano and forms into crystalline rock. Fossil fuels are small pockets of gas & liquid petroleum that are formed from decomposed organic material that are transformed by heat & pressure at depth.
