January is Maryland Reading Month! Please find attached a calendar of events that you can engage in to celebrate the joy of reading. A hard copy will also be sent home.

Rising 6th Graders - Middle School Orientation

Information for:

Parents and Guardians of rising 6th grade students!!!

We look forward to seeing the families of our rising 6th grade students at 6:30pm on Wednesday, January 15th for our Rising 6th Grade Parent Orientation: On this night we welcome our rising 6th grade parents to the building, to learn about the transition to middle school and the 6th grade schedule (Snow Date- January 22nd).

Free Eye Exams

Free eye exams and glasses will be offered at Howard High School on Saturday Feb 29 and Sunday March 1. Slots are limited. Services will be provided on a first come, first served basis, appointment preferred. In case of schools being closed due to inclement weather, the clinic make-up dates will be the weekend of March 7-8. More information can be found in the flyer and if interested, please see the sign-up form.

Early Dismissal

Dear HSES Families,

We know that there are appointments and family needs that require you to pick your students up early from school. In order to support the busy end of the day for our front office, please plan to pick up your student(s) by 2:40 p.m. for any early dismissals. We appreciate your support of this new procedure.

Schools Closed on February 4, 2019

This is a reminder that all schools and offices will be closed (Links to an external site.) Tuesday, February 4, 2020, due to the special primary election to fill the 7th congressional district seat vacated following the passing of Rep. Elijah Cummings.

Please join us on Tuesday January 7th at 6:30 PM in the HSES Media Center for a general budget and committee update, as well as an information session with Mrs. Wadsworth on the discipline policies followed by HSES. This is a general meeting and informational session, open to all, regardless of PTA membership status. We would love to hear your thoughts and questions.

PTA Movie Night

Please join us Friday, January 10th at 6:30 PM for our annual PTA movie night. Wear your pjs, bring a blanket and your favorite stuffed pet and enjoy The Secret Life of Pets 2 with a snack and your friends.

Reminder: this is not a drop-off event, an adult must stay with each student.

January 7

Grade: Kindergarten

Location: Cafeteria

Time: 9-10am (setup will begin at 8:15, tear down will be complete by 10:20)

Extreme Weather presented by the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia Traveling Science Program

Description: Lightning, twisters and hail—oh my! This dynamic show reveals the science of weather—to the extreme. Where does our weather come from, and what factors make it a sunny day or a blustery one? We will discuss the water cycle, explore thunder and lightning, and even make a cloud. We promise a stormy ending to this show as we demonstrate how tornados are formed!

Beyond Building presented by the Maryland Science Center Traveling Science Program

Description: Students will Participate in three engineering activities designed to engage in the engineering design processes, engage in engineering skills beyond building, including manipulating light with lenses and amplifying sound with different materials, and explore various real-world careers that use engineering to get the job done

Grade: 1

Location: Cafeteria

Time: 9-11:30am (setup will begin at 8:15, tear down will be complete by 12pm)

Cosmic Adventures Traveling Planetarium presented by Greg Anderson:

Description: We bring the planetarium (a twenty foot dome classroom) to your site and give presentations with our state-of-the-art digital projector that fire students' imaginations while teaching them about the motions of the skies, the wonders of space, and the effects of light pollution.


April 2

Grades: K-5

Author Visit: Chris Barton

Time: All day 3 shows.

Location: GYM

Description: Chris Barton is the author of picture books including bestseller Shark Vs. Train, Sibert Honor-winning The Day-Glo Brothers, and Whoosh!: Lonnie Johnson's Super-Soaking Stream of Inventions, included on 19 state reading lists. His newest books include Dazzle Ships, the Mighty Truck early-reader series, and What Do You Do with a Voice Like That? The Story of Extraordinary Congresswoman Barbara Jordan. Chris and his wife, YA/middle-grade novelist Jennifer Ziegler, live in Austin, Texas, where Chris has advocated for greater diversity in children's literature by cofounding the Modern First Library program with BookPeople.
