STEM News
October 2016
Word from our Principal
Thank you all for your attendance at our Fall Parent Teacher Conferences last week. A strong partnership between home and school is critical for our students’ academic and social-emotional growth. Recently, the state released our school performance level. STEM Lab continues to receive a Performance Level Ranking, which is the highest ranking possible. This year we received 84.9 points out of 100 points possible. Points are awarded from measuring student growth and student achievement on state tests. Our success would not be possible without the unwavering dedication from parents, students and staff. As a learning community, we value every educational minute that we spend with our students.
Thank you for your continued support.

Halloween Guidelines
At STEM Lab, only grades K-3 will be allowed to bring/wear costumes on Monday, October 31. Please consult teacher websites and newsletters for specifics on whether costumes are to be worn to school or to be brought in for end-of-the-day festivities. We request that all other grades abide by regular dress code and be prepared to make the most of their day.
1. Costumes that would otherwise violate the Student Dress Codes Policy (Superintendent Policy Code: 5060) will only be allowed if approved by an administrator prior to wearing to school.
2. For safety reasons, masks or makeup should not cover the student’s face in a manner that makes the student unrecognizable. Masks or makeup that conceal student’s identity may be worn only during designated times such as during a costume contest.
3. Toy or facsimile guns are not allowed.
4. Other toy weapons (knives, swords, bats) should be pre-approved by administrators and are only allowable if the item is clearly a toy.
5. Costumes that are overly graphic, promote violence or otherwise might logically be assumed to be offensive to others are not acceptable.
6. Costumes that are sexually suggestive and would otherwise violate the school’s dress code are not appropriate.
7. Costumes should not include items with sound effects, lights or other components which would disrupt the classroom learning environment.
8. Regarding costumes that may not be clearly addressed by these guidelines, students should be instructed to have the costume pre-approved by an administrator prior to wearing to school.
Halloween Guidelines Addendum (RE: Clown Costumes)
In light of the recent social media threats involving clowns occurring around the country, the Five Star District will prohibit students and staff from wearing clown costumes on school grounds. We want to emphasize that there have been no credible threats to our students, staff or schools. As always the safety and security of students and staff is our first priority. This adjustment to the 2016 Halloween guidelines was made in the best interest of the school community and creates safe environments for students and staff at the Halloween celebrations this year. It is important to note that this is a temporary moratorium/guideline that district and school leadership will reevaluate at the end of the school year. Students who violate or are suspected to be in violation of this policy will be referred to school administration. We appreciate your cooperation in refraining from wearing clown costumes on school grounds this year.
Trunk Or Treat
These guidelines are also expected to be followed at our PTO Trunk or Treat event on 10/28/16 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Candy will be given out until it is gone! The PTO will be collecting packaged Candy/Treats for our annual Halloween Trunk-Or-Treat Event. They will have a prize for the teacher and/or class who brings in the most candy in weight each week! Please send the Candy in with your child and help us make our event a success for all. We appreciate all the help! Candy will be collected until 10/28. If you have any questions please contact Andrea Reinhardt, the PTO events chair. PTO is also seeking volunteers to help make the evening a success, please sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10c0f4da8a828a0fa7-stem4.
