Savvy Students
January News from Norwood/Holden Library
From the students to the teachers and administrators, everyone is getting on board with Google Apps For Education.
Google Docs
Third grade library students are logging in to their gmail accounts and typing Google Doc writing pieces for their classroom portfolios. They loved being able to add a picture or take a snapshot of their own artwork to include with their typing.
Google Slides
Fifth grade students are transforming poems into Google Slide presentations. They are exploring the 811 section of the library, finding a poem they can connect with, and then using technology as a tool to share that poem with the class.
Google Calendar
I created step by step instructions to help teachers use Google Calendar to book valuable time on the chromebooks for their students. I also provided teachers support with filtering their Gmail and printing from the chromebooks. We all have a lot to learn!
Collaboration is Key
Fourth and Sixth Grade are beginning group projects. They completed surveys that allowed them to gauge their own strengths. The results of those surveys procured them jobs as Techies, Artists, Writers, Researchers or Leaders in their groups. Fourth grade will be creating biography riddles in video format and Sixth grade are creating videos on Internet Safety topics.
Explora Databases
Third grade used Explora Databases (available through AskRI.org) to find and share magazine articles on topics of personal interest to them. Summarizing the author's Big Idea in their own words, they shared their findings in class presentations.
Pairing Books with Websites
Whenever possible, I share great websites with students when they match the theme of our library reading. For example in First grade we read On the Moon by Anna Milbourne, Regards to the Man in the Moon by Ezra Jack Keats and then visited the website KidsAstronomy on the Solar System.
Big Bowling Thank You
Thank you for the donation from the William C. Bowling Sr. Memorial Fund. William C. Bowling served on the Warwick School Committee from 1992-1996. Bowling's wife, Dr. Kathleen Cote Bowling continues his legacy as a supporter of RI schools. The very generous donation from the Bowling organization allowed us to purchase a multitude of lovely and needed books for our Norwood library.
