Van Buren Elementary
News & Updates - February 1, 2023
From the Principal's Office
We have officially crossed the threshold into the second half of the school year! It is hard to believe, but our students have accomplished so much already and they are on track for a great second semester. Reports cards will be available on 2/3 for you to view on School Tool. Please call the main office on Monday if you have any difficulty logging in.
February 20-24 is our winter break. There will be no school for staff or students. March 10th is a half day for elementary students. Students will attend school only in the morning and parent/teacher conferences will be held in the afternoon. Your child's teacher will contact you if a spring conference is needed. Contact your child's teacher with any questions. March 13th is a professional development day for staff. There is no school for students on that day.
Morning Student Drop Off - Safety First!
Please watch for disembarking students and pedestrians. With low visibility in the morning, to ensure the safety of students and families, do not pass other vehicles in the bus loop or drop off point and remember that pedestrians may be crossing from neighboring streets.
COVID-19 home test kits are still available for pick up in our vestibule. Call the main office if you would like a test kit sent home with your child. Home testing at the end of break is a great idea!
PARP
We begin PARP (Pick a Reading Partner) on March 1st with a musical performance and assembly. Stayed tuned for more information from our PTA.
Lost & Found
Our Lost & Found bin is full! We have been able to reunite students with their missing items if there is a name tag, but there are many unclaimed coats, boots, hats, mittens, water bottles, lunch boxes...At the end of February Break we will donate any unclaimed items to a local charity. We will place the bin in the foyer this week so families can come look for lost items.
Have you received an attendance letter? Please read our attendance policy below.
There are many photos included in this newsletter, so don't foget to scroll down, and, as always, please contact us with any questions (315-638-6121).
Have a wonderful week!

Attendance Policy
The entire staff at Van Buren Elementary is dedicated to helping each and every child reach their fullest potential which begins with good attendance. Every missed hour or day is a lost educational opportunity, and elementary students are working on skills every day that lay the groundwork for their longterm success and love of learning.
We have several measures in place to monitor student attendance and address any concerns that may arise. Have you ever receive a "robo call" letting you know that your child isn't in school and then kicked yourself for forgetting to call or email us? (I've been there myself!) This call is one way we ensure timely and accurate communication with you at the beginning of the school day. The attendance letters for tardies and absences are another way that we stay in contact with you throughout each marking period.
The pandemic has changed the way we all think out runny noses, achy tummies and sore throats and we appreciate that you are being vigilant and keeping your child home when they are sick. Your child's teacher will be your primary point of contact to minimize learning loss during their absence.
We are also very fortunate to have an excellent Social-Emotional Support Team and community resources available to assist with school absences due to other factors. Please do not hesitate to contact us.
