Volume 18 - RosieCon 2021-22

RosieCon 2021-22

RosieCon celebrates the books and authors on the Eliot Rosewater Indiana High School book list. The event is sponsored by Wayne Township schools under the leadership of Mrs. Diane Rogers and is a favorite among Indiana teens across the state.

Pre-COVID, we had great participation from DCHS students; the event is virtual (again, COVID related) and is free to all who register!

Who is Eliot Rosewater??

The Indiana Eliot Rosewater Award is an award to honor famous Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut, and all Indiana authors. Eliot Rosewater is a recurring character in Mr. Vonnegut's novels, including God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater.

Building a Culture of Reading

We are making strides in our efforts to build a culture of reading in our school. Many teachers are using the signs we distributed to share what book they are currently reading. Kids can see that we, as adults, DO read! I encourage you to make a deliberate effort to find at least 15 minutes each day to read something we enjoy and share with your students why you are reading it.
Thanks for reading and encouraging our students to explore this very popular list of books. Young Adult novels can help our teens see beyond their world, identify with others who are struggling with the same issues as them, and see that it is possible to overcome adversity even when things seem impossible. Teen years see the highest of the highs and the lowest of the lows. Novels written specifically for teen audiences may not be first pick for adults, but when we are familiar with our students issues and can direct them to options for solutions - and - turn them on to reading for pleasure at the same time....its a win!
