NRWHS November 2017 Newsletter
Mission: To prepare each student for a successful future
Interim Assessments Are Next Week!
As we wrap up October, we continue to work hard to support our students’ academic efforts. Next week (November 6-9) will mark the tenth week of the school year. Not only will the first marking period come to a close, but students will be engaging in interim assessments throughout the week. Interim assessments are cumulative exams (and other assessments) that cover the most significant content that has been taught thus far in the year. The purpose of the exams is for both students and teachers to identify what has – and what has not – been learned up to this point. The assessment results will be used to set future learning goals. For example, in Chemistry, a student may discover that he needs to revisit the difference between covalent and ionic bonds. In English, a student may discover that she needs to focus on the structure of her essays. This type of reflection is critical for students to experience success on their Regents and final examinations in June.
Extra support opportunities continue to be available during and after the school day. Our third period is an intervention period that is designed to provide targeted support to students in the subjects they are struggling with. Teachers are available from 2:25 to 2:55 each Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday to provide extra support. Mrs. McNabb is available to provide extra support to students each weekday from 3 to 5 pm in Room 311. Additionally, through our Lift program, teachers commonly offer extra support from 3 to 5 pm (see the weekly schedule posted in the main foyer). Please encourage your child to take advantage of these valuable learning opportunities.
Thank you very much to all of you who attended our recent Open House! We were pleased with the turnout and enjoyed the opportunity to share information about our academic program. We appreciate your support as we continue to work hard to support our students; please remember that we remain available to respond to your questions and concerns. Enjoy the (hopefully lengthy) fall season!

Sophomore Class Activities
The class of 2020 has been off to a busy start, participating in a lot of NRW traditions. At the end of September, they started preparations for homecoming. They created a hoop based on this year’s homecoming theme, seasons, by incorporating their chosen season, fall. A lot of sophomores came together and worked as a team to create a great design! After that, they immediately began working on plans for the Community Halloween Party, which was held on Thursday October 26th. The class decided to have a monster bean bag toss for the younger NRW community members to enjoy. Several different students in the class of 2020 helped out, having fun along the way! Many sophomores remembered how important the Halloween party was for them when they were younger, and enjoyed helping make Halloween a fun time of year for younger students. The members of the class of 2020 are now hard at work planning for the NRW craft show, which will take place on Saturday November 11th from 9am – 2 pm.
