NEWSLETTER 22 SEPTEMBER 2021

Yesterday's Ministry of Education announcement gives some certainty to parents of Year 6 students that they can attend here next year. I'm sure this announcement will give some relief for whanau going forward.

Transition dates for Year 6 students have been sent through to the primary schools, our senior management visit schools and then welcome Year 6 students in during Term 4 to experience a little of "Intermediate Life"

Enrolment forms will follow at this time.

Next year we operate with a full Year 7 & 8 roll. The Ministry have advised that in 2023 Year 8 students will remain here on site, we await the Minister's decision as to future schooling in Hawera before next steps are announced.

Regardless of his decision we advise there will be no full school uniform worn next year. Due to imminent closure, remaining stock (tee-shirts) have been secured from our supplier and these will be distributed to students on our roll in 2022 to be worn on education trips away from school and sporting events.

A school sweatshirt will be designed by students, manufactured and given to all enrolled students to be worn at school, there will be no cost for either item.

Today we run our school cross country and wish all participants a great race! Results will be in next week's newsletter.

Excitement is building around camps taking place in Week 2 next term. Last week's newsletter had information pertaining to the Wellington and Taupo away camps, this week "Whakamaru" away camp and the "Out and About "Taranaki school camp feature. Next week information around our Technology camp will be shared.

We would appreciate payment for camp by next Friday October 1st please. For those who are having difficulty we can work with you, please talk with Dizzie at the school office for assistance in this area.

Tomorrow I have the pleasure of adjudicating and selecting speech finalists in preparation for our Speech Judge, Mr Russ Standing to select our winners who will not only receive school accolade but go on to compete in the Lions Speechmaker Finals early November.

Yesterday we held a trial fire evacuation completing this within 5 minutes- well done everyone.

Next week we have Education Review Officers on site, in classrooms talking with students, teachers and undertaking administrative tasks.

We also have scheduled a property meeting with our Architect and Arthur Brown Construction personnel. An upgrade and refresh of our 3 toilet blocks will be a welcome addition going forward.

Hawera proposed schooling change

The Ministry has informed us that the Minister has been focused on the Covid response, which means that a decision on the Hāwera schooling network has been delayed.

The Ministry recognises that families will be concerned about what is happening next year, and therefore have informed us that they have proposed that if the final decision is to recapitate the primary schools, that this be implemented from 2023 rather than next year. This would mean the intermediate would operate as normal next year and then in 2023 the primary schools would retain their year 7 students and the intermediate would only have year 8 students on site.

If the final decision is to close Hāwera Intermediate and Hāwera High School, then implementation will also be in 2023 where year 7-13 students would be at the newly formed school.

This means that, regardless of the decision, there would be no changes to schooling in Hāwera for 2022.

CAMP WHAKAMARU

NOT LONG TO GO…

before we depart to our own beautiful piece of paradise, surrounded by water (Lake Whakamaru).

Mrs Ahinekura Crawford will be leading this Camp with the following staff, Mr Glenn Heather, Mrs Melissa Henare, Matua Tuki Vaine and Mr Des Bain along with our five parent helpers who are excited to be a part of this travelling group.

We will be leaving at 9am, 26th October sharp so please be super ready to roll that morning. We will have a couple of stops along the way for morning tea and lunch and arrive around 2pm.

Our 70 students will be participating in a range of activities such as...

zip-line, relaxing in a spa pool, kayaking, swimming, air-rifles, climbing wall, archery, confidence course, night games, orienteering/initiatives, Burma Trial, Top Team Competition, and a blazing campfire while roasting marshmallows and making smores.

After such a busy exciting time away, we know students will be ready to return home as we head back on Friday with the expectation of being in Hawera by 3pm.

Out and About

We have approximately 40 students taking part in the Out and About Camp and are looking forward to a great time during our camp with a mixture of fun and educational activities planned.

The staff attending this camp are Mrs Stewart, Mrs Vaid, Shaun, Trista, and Nicole, with one parent helper. We will be meeting in Room 11 at the start of each day at 8:30am, wearing clothes appropriate for the day's activities and bringing a drink bottle and something for morning tea.

Fun activities have been planned which include visits to the Hawera Aquatic Centre, Brooklands Zoo, The Splash Centre, ICON Sports and Puke Ariki.

On Wednesday and Thursday we will be returning to school at approximately 3:30pm.

In Term Four we return to our summer uniform. This is shorts for boys and culottes for girls and either shoes and socks or sandals. If your child wears sandals they will need to bring their winter shoes for Tech days. Havianas are suitable for school as long as they have back-straps or any plain black sandals. Sandals that go up the ankle are not suitable.

MUFTI DAY

No uniform this Friday!!! One of our 2020 Year 8 students Kieran Taylor is experiencing troubling health times and we would like to support Kieran and his whanau with a koha. A $2.00 donation would be appreciated please. We do have a few simple rules around this - no offensive messages, no singlets and no pajamas. We look forward to seeing our students in their home clothes for the day - they look so much older!

Congratulations to Terenzo Fale who has been selected to represent Taranaki Basketball in the Under 13 years Rep team.

His outstanding basketball talent was spotted by a scout while playing for our school team 'Celtics' after school each Wednesday.

Terenzo broke his leg early in term 2 but didn't allow this to stop him from supporting his team and getting back on the court as soon as he could.

Trials for the rep team were held in early August; and even amid the trials of COVID lockdown Terenzo has continued to train.

The first Rep game is being held in Napier during the first week of the school holidays. Good luck Terenzo!

Congratulations Jade Te Wiki for being accepted to Manukura High School, Palmerston North starting 2022.
