Career Readiness Tip of the Month--Getting Involved with Your Career On-Campus
We tend to focus on off-campus opportunities when thinking about expanding our careers. While summer internships and postgraduate jobs are extremely important, there are still many opportunities to expand your career while on campus.
One way to do so is to keep an eye out for on-campus jobs and internships. These positions are fantastic ways to gain experience while also attending school. Look on TribeCareers.wm.edu, as well as Student Employment section of the Financial Aid website, for updated postings. Additionally, some departments, such as Residence Life and the Sadler Center, share their opportunities on their own web pages. Take a look now, as some start their processes early!
Another great way to help expand your knowledge of your career path is through research at the College. Many departments offer research opportunities to undergraduate students. You can reach out to faculty, or even the Charles Center to learn more. Doing so will help you get hands-on experience in your potential career path.
One final resource is on campus professional organizations. There are many different associations and student groups that are made specifically to improve student’s careers across all different industries from the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) to the Sports Business Club. These groups have resume workshops, interviews with alumni, and other career orientated events.
Career Competency of the Month-Critical Thinking/Problem Solving
Each month, we’ll take a look at one of eight Career Competencies determined to be most highly sought by employers. You can learn more about these through mycareer.wm.edu.
Critical Thinking
Exercise sound reasoning to analyze issues, make decisions, and overcome problems.
Obtain, interpret, and use knowledge, facts, and data in this process.
May demonstrate originality and inventiveness.
Do you feel confident making real time decisions?
Are you confident bringing original ideas to the table in your academic and professional life?
Do you know how to question data given to you and interpret it?
TribeCareers Tip of the Month--How to Upload Your Resume
As we get further into the school year, you may start looking for possible jobs or internships on campus and for the summer. A great tool to use for this is TribeCareers. You can search for on-campus jobs, summer internships, and winter externships on TribeCareers. When applying to these, it is important to have an updated resume loaded to TribeCareers.
As a reminder, here's where to find it: (see image below)
- Log in to TribeCareers.wm.edu
- Click Documents>My documents>Add New> Document Type> Resume>Upload Document>Submit
An important note: under label make sure to write your name, date, and description of the document. For example, “Tribe Griffin Resume Nov 2018”. This process is the same for all documents you would like to upload to TribeCareers such as cover letters, writing samples, or other documents. See below for screenshots of the process.
