September 21 2020 Principal Message
Jeffreys Grove Magnet Elementary
Dear Jeffreys Grove Families,
Thank you to the 35 families who were able to join us virtually for our General Assembly Meeting on Thursday evening. Our PTA President, Cheri Thomas, introduced the PTA Executive Board Members and also shared the 2020-2021 PTA budget as well as what they have planned for the 2020-2021 school year. This year the Jeffreys Grove PTA has agreed to provide for programs such as the Positivity Project, RazKids, PearDeck and BrainPop. These resources will help our teachers better assess student academic progress as well as support their growth. Our PTA has made it their goal to raise money for much needed classroom technology upgrades. We are very grateful for your continued support and look forward to another year of continued partnering!
As you know the district launched a parent survey in the districtwide community message sent on Friday, September 18. While that message served as the initial notice regarding the survey, we want to remind you about your opportunity to provide feedback in this communication we are sending out. Parents should respond to the survey by Monday, Sept. 21 at 5 p.m.
I also wanted to share that there has been a policy revision regarding the recording of class sessions. The policy change allows students enrolled in any online class to access video-recordings of online class sessions, including text chats among all participants that are part of the recordings, upon request. The primary purpose of the proposed revision is to provide “catch up” opportunities for students who are unable to access online classes in real time due to factors beyond their control. A secondary purpose is to provide opportunities for students to review online class sessions to reinforce materials covered.
On Tuesday, September 15, the Wake County Board of Education was provided an update regarding the reopening of school campuses for students who have opted for Plan B. The district is proposing a target date of Oct. 26 for students who have opted for Plan B to return to in-person instruction. A detailed plan will be presented to the school board in the next two to three weeks for approval from the Wake County Board of Education. Families who committed to the Virtual Academy are not affected by this discussion and will remain enrolled in virtual school for the fall or full year (depending on what they signed up for).
Sincerely,
Juli Ventura

Grade Level Spotlight - 1st Grade!
Our first graders have been showing such excitement for learning since day one! They are not only having fun but also gaining knowledge. In just a couple of weeks into the school year, they have been exposed to numerous engaging activities where collaboration, creativity, communication and critical thinking have been evident.
Our awesome first grade teachers and specialists are continuing to design instruction and focus on getting to know our students better each day.
In Literacy, students are working on asking and answering questions about key details in a text, describing characters, settings, and main events while learning about different tools and how these tools make our jobs easier.
In Math, they have been counting to 100 starting at any number less than 100. Also recognizing, writing and building “teen” numbers.
In Social Studies, they have been learning about “authority figures” in our community and who makes sure we follow rules at home, at school, and in the community. Students have also been working on best ways to resolve a conflict.
During specials they have been creating original art, learning about singing dynamics with “Willoughby, Willoughby”, learning about pirates and practicing locomotor skills. These skills are important for movement and are the building blocks of coordination.
Our “JG Firsties” are surely #goingthedistance!
