Extended Essay & Reflective Project Symposium

What was the Symposium in the library?

Tuesday August 30th, we had over a 100 seniors present their Reflective Projects or Extended Essays to students, staff, & community partners. This is the culminating piece to their IB programme.

Extended Essay is a component of the Diploma Programme for students who are taking a full DP course load. The Extended Essay starts their junior year and they finish their senior year. "The extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. One component of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) core, the extended essay is mandatory for all students."

Reflective Project is a component of the Career Programme for students who are taking a few DP courses their Junior & Senior year. "The Reflective Project is an in-depth work produced over an extended period and submitted in year 2 of the Career-related Programme. Students identify, analyze, discuss and evaluate an ethical dilemma associated with an issue from their career- related studies."

Personal Project Introduction

What is a Personal Project?

  • It a problem, you see, or you have.
  • It's something you want to learn.
  • It is something you want to help.
  • It's something that you are passionate about and you build a plan around that passion.

Watch this video from another school on how they explained Personal Projects. Note the date, use of Managebac, & the email attached do not relate. (Managebac is a tool that you will use if you pursue the IBCP or IBDP diploma your Junior year. CLICK HERE

When will Personal Projects happen?

All 10th grade students will have the opportunity to finish a personal project their Sophomore year as a Hillsboro IB MYP Student. This is the final piece to your MYP years that you might have started at JT Moore or West End. Even if you did not attend an IB Middle School and even if this is your first year, you still have the ability to finish a Personal Project. This piece is a requirement for Hillsboro's Middle Years Programme. Your final Score on the MYP Personal Project will be added to any student completing the Diplomma Programme or Career Programme Certificate upon graduation their senior year. Completion of this project will be documented at Hillsboro as a Middle Years Programme Completer that can be used for college applications.

Class of 2026 (Sophomores of school year 2022-2023) will be introduced to this through their ELA classes Mid-September.

Class of 2027 (Freshman of school year 2022-2023) will be introduced this in the Spring through their ELA classes.

Why do we have a Personal Project at Hillsboro?

Because we are an IB school that has an MYP curriculum. (You go to Waffle House for Waffles and you go to Hillsboro for MYP/IB because that is on the sign). The Personal Project is possibly the best project that you will be assigned your sophomore year. This is your chance to build the foundation for research and incorporate the Design Cycle to build an amazing project all while researching something of your choosing! This is PERSONAL! You research what you love, what you are interested in, or what you are upset about! You decide and we are here to help you through the process of research and presentation of ideas and learning.

Every 9th & 10th Grade Student should have an Agenda!

Agendas! Agendas! Agendas!

Students, Teachers, Counselors, & Admin!

Please remember to use this valuable tool in all classes! Here is a great example of how your agenda should be looking like daily!

If you still need an agenda, we have extras in the library.

Agendas are available through all 9th & 10th grade ELA classes as well as in all AVID classes. If you have your own, you do not need to get another. By week one, all students will have the opportunity to take ownership of their learning by working on their Self-Management Skills through using their Agendas in all classes. Read below about MYP's Approaches to Learning and the focus lesson for this month, "Self-Management".

What is MYP?

zoom_out_map

From IBO (The International Baccalaureate Organization) The MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.

The MYP aims to develop active learners and internationally minded young people who can empathize with others and pursue lives of purpose and meaning.

The programme empowers students to inquire into a wide range of issues and ideas of significance locally, nationally and globally. The result is young people who are creative, critical and reflective thinkers.

At Hillsboro it is the culmination of our feeder schools, JT Moore & West End's, MYP Programme. The MYP Program prepares all students at Hillsboro the option to pursue the IBDP courses available their Junior & Senior year.
