Tiger Times
NEWS AND INFO FOR SLATER STAFF 10.7
In the beginning of the year we talked about the difference between "change" and "transition." We noted that change can happen very quickly, but transition takes time and is usually not very comfortable. We also noted that change + transition = transformation. It's not always easy, but the transformation that will take place in our students, our school, and ourselves will be worth it. When we look at our progress at the end of this year, we want to feel proud of our work, knowing that we gave everything we had to help our students live their best lives.
Making the commitment to serve in a turnaround school is one that should not be taken lightly. It requires the deepest level of LOVE for our students (every single one), belief in their ability to achieve, and belief in our ability to stay committed, even when it gets tough.
I'm grateful to work with individuals who have the strength, fortitude, and talent to take this challenge. Thank you for all of your work thus far. We appreciate your commitment and wish you a restful and peaceful fall break!
Terrific Tigers!

90s AttenDANCE
During the week of 9/30 we saw notable growth. We sent home 150 messages (17 more) to families and we shared 63 pictures and videos. That’s 18 more pictures than last week. Our positive student feedback stayed right at 84%. We are still striving for 90% positive feedback school wide. Please add Principal Kemp, Dean Amos, Dean Moultrie and Coach Turner as co-teachers if you have not done so already. Please reach out to any parents that have not connected with your ClassDojo. Contact Ms. Woods if you need additional support.
October 7th is the World Day of Bullying Prevention and it’s 7 days away! Please represent your stance against bullying by wearing blue on Monday, 10/7!

Plan and Practice Your Escape!” Many of our Tiger Scholars will participate in two, state sponsored activities, the Statewide Poster Contest and the Statewide “Fire Safety House” Essay Contest – What I want to Learn and Know about the Fire Safety House”
The culminating event will be the 27th Annual Life, Fire & Safety Awards Luncheon will be held at the Monroe County Conference Center in Forsyth, Georgia, Thursday October 24th.
We will also participate in the Statewide Fire Drill, Wednesday, October 9, 2019, at 10:00 a.m.; if inclement weather, the alternate date is Wednesday, October, 16, at 10:00 a.m.
This week we will focus on what to do during an Exterior Lockdown. Exterior Lockdowns occur when there is a threat outside of the school.
If anyone needs further information on the new lockdown nomenclature, please reach our to Mr. Moultrie. Please review the expectations for each of the three types of lockdown Exterior, Interior and Full Lockdown
- Please stop, address and redirect any adult you may see on our hallways without a visitors pass to the front office.
- Immediately intervene anytime you see students in conflict. Remember it only takes a moment for a spark to turn into a fire. Students under your supervision should be monitored closely.
- Mr. Moultrie would love and come to read to your class. Please email him to coordinate a time that is ideal.
The playground can be a fun place. It’s also a place where a lot can go wrong really fast. Although it’s nice to huddle and talk to your peers during recess, it ditracts from active monitoring especially when students are spread across the massive grassy area. Spread out to ensure maxaimum supervision. Monitor student interactions closely. Remember it only takes a second for a spark to turn into a flame.
Students are striving for Caught Being Kind tickets just like this young lady! Keep providing cards to students you caught being kind!
Extra tickets are in the office. You can also use the attached document to print your own.
You should have received a 2 to a page document to report your Tiger Tracker results. Be sure to have a count of the number of students who met the goal and the number of students who achieved the 100% club ready when we come around on Monday.
Culture Resource of the Week
This week’s resources come in the form of two Edutopia articles directly related to our mindfulness, meditation and SEL initiatives. The cover story on the site is also a good read. It’s entitled The Evolution of a Trauma-Informed School
The first article is promoting self-care.
Getting Mindful About Breathing
The second article is meant to bolster our efforts to impart the gift of mindfulness to our students.
Pause, Refocus, Assess: Meditation in the Classroom
Bonus Resource: Here is a brief video entitled “The Empathy Game”. It presents scenarios and then presents the question, “Is it empathy or not empathy?” It would be great to play with your classes during Morning Meeting or any other time you deem appropriate.
Instructional Resource of the Week
What: A science resource created to engage and extend young students’ knowledge on a particular science topic. Each topic is introduced with a thought, provoking video along with discussion questions and an explore activity.
Integrating this resource during small group instruction would allow students to gain and apply science knowledge in a fun and engaging manner.
