Questions PLC #1 8/28 week
How can questioning propel students to deeper thinking?
PLC Guiding Questions
How do we know they have it?
What do we do if they already know it?
What do we do if they do not get it?
Essential Standards
This is where we start...
- Look over the ELA standards now as a team, read the standard and underline the verbs
- We assess at the verbage level, are we doing that now?
- There are 3 strands in the ELA standards, reading and reading foundation strand, writing standards strand, & then language, speaking, and listening standards
- Look at the vertical alignment of the standards, this is good to know for re-teach and enrichment lessons
- Look through your lesson plans for this week and determine the depth of knowledge the lesson is at, does it match the level of assessement you will be giving based on the standards verbs?

Research has been done on the above strategies, proving they have a huge impact when used correctly. The percentile gain is listed above for each strategy. Marzano, Pickering, & Pollock have compiled this information in an easy to read book, with each strategy broken into chapters with a simple explanation and samples of how to use them.
Are we currently using any of the strategies above on a regular basis? If so discuss, if not where could we start adding them in?
These are just a few places I can see where the above strategies would fall...
- Thinking Maps
- Interactive Math Notebook
- Kagan Strategies
- Science labs
- Writing and stating our objectives
- Book Buzzes
- and many more....
Are you surprised by your students scores?
A few things to remember when planning your lessons
- Focus on the 4 PLC questions
- Put the full Standard in front of you to make sure the planning is at the right depth of knowledge based on the verbs
- Include 2-3 high level questions in your lesson plan to guide the conversation
- Include how you present the concept to students, the activity that hooks them into the learning
- How you are assessing the student learning
- Use your resources from Kim, your team, campus resources, & the BES professional library
