Pinehill School Newsletter

Wednesday 6th July 2022

Message from the Principal

Kia ora koutou,

A huge THANK YOU to the Friends of Pinehill School (FoPs) for all their hard work, time, effort and organisation of our school Disco last Thursday. I would also like to thank and acknowledge our wonderful parent helpers and our dedicated staff who all pitched in with helping on the night either at the stalls, in the carpark, dancing with the students and of course cleaning up afterwards. It was a truly magical evening and the key message the students have shared with me was ‘it was the best disco ever’.

This term has been a very productive and eventful term. We have achieved so much, not just in our teaching and learning programmes but also school and cluster events. Highlights include ‘Dis’ Week, Pink Shirt Day, School and Cluster Cross Country, Mathex, Matariki Community Morning tea, Football Cluster and the Disco.

On Friday your child will be bringing home a mid year progress school report. Please take time to go through this and if there is anything you are unsure of or would like further information about, please do not hesitate to email your child’s teacher to further discuss.

Enjoy the school holiday break coming up. We look forward to seeing everyone back for Term 3, Monday 25th July. We will welcome our new students and families to Pinehill School on the first day back in classrooms and at assembly, and more formally with a whakatau in week 4 next term which we will send you further information about closer to the time. Everyone is welcome to attend.

Ehara taku toa i te toa takitahi, engari he toa takitini

Success is not the work of one but the work of many.

Ngā mihi nui,

Carla Veldman, Principal

Kapa Haka - Can you help?

Our lovely Merimona Kenrick has guideled, taught and led our Pinehill School Kapa Haka group for six years. We are grateful for all she has attributed to this role and will miss her expertise, passion and commitment to Kapa Haka as Meri leaves at the end of the term. We have two passionate teachers, Mr Rogers and Miss Everett who will continue to meet with the Kapa Haka next term. I would also like to do a shout out to our community. Do we have a whanau or community member with experience in Kapa Haka who is available to support us with our Kapa Haka group? Please email me if you can help out carla@pinehill.school.nz

Interschool Mathex Results

Several weeks ago, 3 teams of Pinehill Maths enthusiasts participated in the annual Interschool Mathex competition. We had 2 goals going into this competition:

  1. To have fun and to walk away afterwards saying, “Dis!”

  2. To get all 3 teams placing in the top 20.

There were 43 teams competing and we are pleased to announce that both goals have been ticked off.

The team with Luke Chung, Arthur Zhai, Bogyeom Kim and Tejas Tyagi placed 9th.

Placing 12th equal were both our other teams: Ethan Liu, Tom Bateup, Eddie Liu, Emily Ke, Ehani, Huang, Wota Li, Tania Luo and Dylan Sun.

We would also like to acknowledge our group of reserves who trained weekly with the 3 teams: Serina Gholami Ke, Angela Kim, Lily Dahlberg, Sean Lee and Siyal Jung.

Miss Everett and Mrs Milne thoroughly enjoyed working with these students leading up to the competition, and were very impressed with their attitude and collaboration on the day. It is great to know that Maths is alive and well at Pinehill School.

Helping Hands

At yesterday’s assembly, Room 19 shared their ‘helpful hands’. Even though they are 5 years old, these tamariki already know that acts of kindness don’t need to be huge to be significant. Kia Kaka, Room 19. Check out some of their examples below.

CULTURAL WEEK

Parent and Family Class Sharing

Term 3 Week 2 is our Culture and Identify celebration at Pinehill School. To celebrate we would like to invite parents into the classroom to share their culture in Week 2, 1st August - 5th August.

Some suggestions are

  • read a story in your home language to the class or small group

  • share pictures/photos, teach our children a game

  • share a dance from your culture

  • play a musical instrument etc.

Please email your child’s teacher about what you would like to share and when you are available.

Parade

As part of our Cultural Celebration we are holding a Celebration Parade on

Monday 8th August at 11.30am.

You are very welcome to come and watch or take part in the parade, we would love to see as many parents and caregivers there as possible. Please see the school map below displaying the trail we will walk for the parade. Some of our cultural groups will be performing and we have a special surprise, depending on the weather!

Our children will have the option to dress in their cultural dress and march around the school with the country’s flag of choice.

We understand that children and families may identify with more than one country. For them to be able to express their ethnicity we are asking parents to talk with their child about their family ethnicity. Rather than teachers directing children to a country, children can parade carrying two flags that symbolise the country they identify with and the one where they were born. Please talk to your child/ren about this so they are able to communicate with their teacher which flag group they will be walking with during the parade. We hope that in this way everyone’s ethnicity can be shared and celebrated.

Shared lunch

After our Parade on Monday 8th August we are having a shared lunch in classrooms.

You are invited to send your child in with a small plate of food to share from your culture. Please be aware we will not be able to reheat food, cut up or provide cutlery. Food will need to be pre prepared and ready to eat and enjoy.

Please be mindful that there are children in the school with peanut allergies and would appreciate peanuts not being in food sent to school. All food must have an ingredient list so children can pick what they are able to eat. We will be encouraging them to try something different.

A big thank you for your ongoing support.

All parents attending are asked to sign in through the SchoolApp.

Pinehill’s ‘Trees for Survival’ Planting out day

Our ‘Trees For Survival’ seedlings are now ready for planting out on a landowner’s property. This year we will be planting at 63c Field Lane, Waitoki. This is the same property as last year.

‘Planting Out Day’ is Friday 12 August, with a rain back-up date to be Friday 19 August. We are excited to be taking all the students from the Year 5/6 team this year. To help us with this planting session, we need one adult to two or three children for supervision and assistance please. The adult helper may be a grandparent (they must be fit and agile - the area we are planting this year is sloping) or other family relation or friend over the age of 18.

Pinehill will be holding a ‘Green Mufti-Day’ to help raise funds to cover the cost of buses for this planting out day. This will be on the last day of this term. Please see the poster later in this newsletter.

Permission slips are due back this Friday 8th July.

Thank you, Marg Milne

Last Fun Food Friday of Term 2 – This Friday, the 8th of July

It’s Fun Food Friday this week! Online orders close tonight, Wednesday 6 July. Don’t miss out! Please place your orders using the Kindo Online Shop. Lunch will be delivered to your child’s classroom at lunchtime. For every order, we raise $1 for the school. Thank you for your support!

We will be selling snacks in the hall foyer at lunchtime between 12.40 pm and 1 pm. From the health point of view, we suggest 1-2 snacks and a $5 note is enough for your child. We encourage children only buy snacks for their own consumption. Please let your child know that the parent helpers may turn them away if they spend more than $5 per purchase and/or buy for their friends.

Yummy Stickers

This school holiday, please keep collecting “Yummy” stickers from apples, nectarines, peaches and pears, and barcodes from bags of “Yummy” fruit. This is a year-long promotion. The stickers are exchanged for sports equipment for the school. All stickers and barcodes need to be stuck on the official forms, which can be downloaded from www.yummyfruit.co.nz or the FOPS fundraising page on the school website. You can return the complete forms to the white box outside the administration block's health room. Thank you for your ongoing support! If you have any queries, please email us at pinehillfops@gmail.com.
