It's Fun Run Time!!!

Our FUN RUN kicked off with a pep rally on Monday and is now in full swing! This is one of our biggest fundraisers of the year. Our goal is to raise $25,000 for cultural enrichment programs, field trip scholarships, teacher appreciation, books, and supplies for the classroom, and we need your help !!!

Use your Pledgebook that came home this week or log onto to start gathering pledges for your student. We want this to be fun and easy for everyone, so think of others who can support your student as they run laps to help our school. And don’t forget to save the Fun Run Date—next Thursday October 4 at Memorial Stadium in downtown Asheville. You’re invited to come out and cheer on our students! Thank you for supporting Claxton!

We need volunteers at the Fun Run to serve water, mark laps as students run, and cheer on our CLX Leaders! Sign up here to help for an hour shift:

Final Weekend for Donations to Hurricane Florence Relief Drive

Claxton's Student Lighthouse Team wants to help! Claxton is collecting items for a relief drive that is sponsored by UNCA. Items will be shared with those who have been impacted by Hurricane Florence. You can drop off items at Claxton between now and Oct 2 and our Student Lighthouse Team will be helping with the collection. Please contribute new, unopened items only. Needed items include non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies, baby supplies (diapers, food--no glass, please), bedding, clothing (socks and underwear), pet food, and hygiene items.

Claxton's Student Health Fair--Volunteers Needed!

Information about our annual student health fair was sent home in Thursday folders this week. We are looking for volunteers to help with our annual student health fair on Mon, Oct 15. Volunteers will assist with collecting and recording information for vision and BMI assessments. No experience is necessary! Sign up here if you'd like to help-- Thank you!

4th Grade Families: Let's Show Our Thanks with Oct 9th Staff Appreciation Lunch

Throughout the upcoming school year, we would like to show our appreciation to the teachers and staff at Claxton with a series of organized lunches provided by the families and PTO. We plan to serve lunch on early release days, host a holiday lunch in December, and plan an exciting week with various gifts during Teacher Appreciation Week. We have four luncheons scheduled this school year and we will ask each grade to help out with one meal. As seasoned Claxton families, the 4th Grade Families will provide our second lunch on Tuesday, October 9. All 4th Grade Families can efficiently sign up via a Google Sheets to help out. If you are having difficulties using the Google Sheets, please email Michelle Gray with the item(s) you would like to bring and she will record it for you. To make it even easier we will be collecting all items in the AM drop off line from 7:15-8:00 AM on the 9th.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions and, most importantly, thank you for making our Staff Appreciation Lunch a successful one!

Classroom Wishes and Needs

Book Leveling Help: If you're excited to kick off the school year volunteering for Claxton and might still be waiting for a Level II training or for approval of your background check, we have a current volunteer need that does not have these requirements. Our teachers have classroom libraries with books arranged according to reading level. Several of our teachers would love to have help with organizing their libraries by level. This task involves scanning the bar code on books into a database/app and then categorizing the books into levels. Having volunteers complete this task would be a tremendous support to our teachers! Please email if you can help!

5th Grade 1-on-1 Volunteer: Our 5th grade teaching team is looking for volunteers to work with students one-on-one to support a range of needs in the classroom. The time commitment is flexible but it would be great if a volunteer had a few hours per week to offer for several months or for the year. Volunteers need to have a current background check and must have attended a Level II ACS training. Please email if you can help!

Room Reps Still Needed!

Room Reps are still needed in several of our Claxton classrooms, so please consider taking on this role for your student’s class! The intended role of the Room Rep is to help distribute important information regarding class and PTO events. We want every family to be informed about events and allowed the opportunity to volunteer at Claxton. The Room Rep also collaborates with the classroom teacher regarding class needs, which may include extra supplies, snacks, or volunteers for class events.

Room reps are still needed for the following classes:

3rd: Conti

5th: Autrey

Are you interested in being a room rep this year? If so, please contact Amanda Pattanayak at or at (617) 953-0855 as soon as possible.

Social Justice League News

The Claxton Social Justice League is excited to share that our team received a $5,000 grant for this school year from Teaching Tolerance to provide quarterly planning time with our teachers in order to integrate the Teaching Tolerance Social Justice Standards with their unit plans! To learn more about our work, check out our newsletter:

Join CLXLeaders for a Good Cause--Eblen Charities' Walk, Run, or Roll!!!

Claxton is putting a team together for Eblen Charities 18th Annual Walk, Run or Roll event taking place Saturday October 13th at 9:00 am. All funds raised help Eblen Charities to keep helping out more than 125,000 local families with medical care and supplies, travel assistance, dental and prescription care, funding assistance for food, rent, heat and other emergency aid. We value Eblen's services to families and want to get together a team of amazing CLXLeaders who will WALK with us and raise money for Eblen. Want to join? Register here by finding team name CLXLeaders on Eblen's website.

Serving as a Volunteer in the Classroom or as a Field Trip Chaperone This Year

Whether you're a new or returning Claxton volunteer, an online background check is needed each year to volunteer in any capacity with students at school or as a chaperone on field trips. It takes about 5 minutes to start your background check but can sometimes take 2-3 weeks for them to be approved. You cannot volunteer until your background check has been approved, so jump over to this link to act now. You don't want to miss a chance to help out as a volunteer!

Also, if you haven't already done so, you'll need to attend a Level II volunteer training with Asheville City Schools before you can volunteer at Claxton. The training is a one-time requirement (not needed each year) and this year's schedule is set so go ahead and make plans to attend one of these brief (~20 min) trainings. Please see below for the schedule. All trainings are held in the Board Room at the Central Office of Asheville City Schools at 85 Mountain Street. No registration is required to attend the training.

Claxton Crafty -- Save the Date and Call for Vendors and Musicians

Mark your calendars for Sat Nov 10 for the Claxton Crafty at the Salvage Station from 10am-4pm! We invite vendors and musicians to join in this great event. Proceeds from booth rental fees go directly to support Claxton Elementary School (and vendors keep 100% of their own sales). We're planning to host the event outside but our backup plan in case of rain or cold is to use the inside space at Salvage Station. The link to the application is below. Please complete the application and we'll be in touch with further details and vendor booth rental payment information. We are planning on having live music, again provided by talented members of our Claxton family and other community members. Mr. Butler, our music teacher, is helping to coordinate this. If you know anyone else (adult, child, professional, or novice) who may be interested in performing, please contact me. Thank you for your interest!

Call for Auction Donations!

Mark your calendars for the Claxton Auction on March 29, 2019. Although it’s a little ways away, we need to start gathering non-cash donations for the auction now.
