Counselor's Message
During this challenging year, school staff are working to teach students about mental health
and how to seek help if they are worried about themselves or a friend. We are using a
program called SOS Signs of Suicide. The program teaches students about this difficult topic
and encourages them to seek help.
SOS has been used by thousands of schools over the past few decades. Studies have shown
that it effectively teaches students about depression and suicide while reducing the number
of students’ self-reported suicide attempts.
Through the program, students learn:
- that depression is treatable, so they are encouraged to seek help
- how to identify depression and potential suicide risk in themselves or a friend
- to ACT (Acknowledge, Care and Tell a trusted adult) if concerned about themselves or a friend
- who they can turn to at school for help, if they need it
Students will watch age-appropriate video clips and participate in a guided discussion about
depression, suicide, and what to do if they are concerned about a friend. Following the video,
students will complete a response slip which asks whether they would like to talk to an adult
about any concerns. School staff will conduct brief meetings with any student asking to talk.
Following the video, students will complete a brief depression screening tool. This tool cannot provide a diagnosis of depression but does indicate whether a young person should be referred for evaluation by a mental health professional.
We encourage you to visit www.sossignsofsuicide.org/parent for information on warning
signs for youth suicide, useful resources, and some of the key messages students will learn.
We are including:
- An infographic for you to reinforce the ACT message at home
- An info sheet with resources
- A list of local resources
If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in this program please

Sports
WIAA/ DOH Have released the following change in Covid Testing Guidelines - (12/20/2021)
- In response to recent sports-related outbreaks, the testing requirements for high-risk sporting activities has been updated to require screening testing of all athletes, coaches, trainers and supporting personnel regardless of vaccination status. Further, the testing frequency has increased to 3 times weekly. Among those screening tests, at least one must occur no sooner than the day before the competition; ideally and whenever possible, the day of the event.
If you have any questions regarding these changes please contact our Athletic Director Leah Sandlian @ lsandlian@fifeschools.com

Meet your Team Adams Teachers!
Mr. Naiker
Mr. Naiker (rhymes with hiker) is Team Adams’ Connections teacher. He hopes to be the concierge for communication between students, teachers and families. This will be Mr. Naiker’s 7th year teaching, third year at SLMS and second year as Team Adams Connections teacher. When Mr. Naiker is not at SLMS, he is at home with his three daughters and son watching Peppa Pig, making movies about princess knights, holding his breath while they perform some sort of American Ninja Warrior stunt and sneaking chocolate treats from the pantry.

Mrs. Boyd
Mrs. Boyd is the amazing 7th grade science teacher for Team Adams! This is her 10th year at SLMS. She is also the volleyball coach. When she’s not shooting off rockets, or dissecting frogs, Mrs. Boyd loves being with her family. She has been married to her husband Kraig for 27 years. She keeps a fortune from a fortune cookie taped to her computer at all times that says, “An airplane ride is soon in your future sending you to fun”! Let’s all take a ride to fun together this year!!
