Student Behavior
As we approach Spring Break and the end of the year, unacceptable student behavior increases. Remember to reteach expectations and reinforce them consistently. One of the biggest behaviors I am observing is students not being able to solve their own problems. They look to you to solve the problem for them instantly ("He's messing with me."), and when you don't, they act out. It is important to teach children how to be a problem solver in these situations. Here are 5 steps for them to learn:
1- Take a deep breath to calm down.
2- Ask the person to "Please stop."
3- Tell the person how their behavior makes you feel. ("I don't like it when you snatch my pencil from me. It makes me mad.")
4- Walk away (Have a designated space in your classroom for a student to go. It is important to stress to students that they take their work with them to this space. It is not a space to do nothing.)
5- Tell a teacher. (If students have truly tried to solve their problem, and it hasn't worked, it is time for you to step in and address the problem.)
I will place a 5 step chart in your mailbox. Feel free to use it to teach your students how to be a problem solver. You can shrink the photo as well and tape it to a students' desk who may need the reminders to be directly in front of them. Our students' reactions to minor things can be explosive. It stems from their lifestyle outside of school. It is our job to teach replacement behaviors to our students for them to be successful.
