What is going on?

February 15-19

Math: In math we will continue with our study of geometry. This week students will use attributes of 2D shapes to help identify 3D shapes. Students will work with geoboards to decompose 2-D shapes by cutting or dividing the shape to find and identify a new shape. We will create 3D shapes based on given attributes.

Reading: We will continue learning how to use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words.

Writing: There are two types of fiction stories 2nd graders will learn to write: realistic fiction and imaginative fiction. This week we will focus on realistic fiction. Students will learn to create stories about real people, placing them in current day settings, and giving them a problem to try to solve in a believable way.

Social Studies: We will be diving into government to learn all about our president, governor, and mayor and their roles in office. Students will learn about state and federal taxes. Parents, Have your kiddo find the sales tax on your receipts!

Sight Words: We are learning the following words this week: big, each, good, letter, people, soon, way, use

Please continue to work with your child to read, write, and spell these words with consistency.

A Note from Mrs. Varljen:

Valentine's Day Parties: Valentine's Day Parties will be held on Friday, February 12. This year, our parties will look a little different as we celebrate the true meaning of Valentine's Day, which at the elementary school centers around building friendships within the classroom and school community. In order to do this, we are limiting the number of volunteers/visitors to the classroom and asking parents not to attend on this day. This will give our students and teachers the opportunity to celebrate the day with their class by simply exchanging cards and having the time to socialize with each other. Each grade level will have a different plan for their parties as teachers take the lead in the party planning. Grade level leaders will be working closely with the lead homeroom parents to coordinate the number of volunteers needed for their specific activities as the younger grade levels may require several parent volunteers while older grades may handle the parties on their own. We truly appreciate your support as we keep our Valentine's parties small allowing our students and teachers time to enjoy each other.

Please sign up, and you can view how many points your monkey earned and lost during our day. It was sent home on Wed. in your child's planner. I am giving the kids a point if you sign up. It even shows a cool graph of " positive "and" needs work " behaviors during the school day. Please check in daily or a few times a week. I appreciate your support!
