Don't Just TELL Me, Show Me: Be Empowered by Real Teachers in Real Classes
Teachers are often told to "keep all students engaged all the time". Easier said than done! Rarely do teachers have opportunities to observe effective engagement strategies in real classrooms. Embracing a seeing-is-believing approach to professional learning, this session will explore a variety of high-yield strategies through a new series of classroom videos that include reflections from teachers and students. These current videos allow teachers the opportunity to watch practices come alive, so that they may apply them in their own setting. Participants will also interact with other tools, such as a processing guide developed to facilitate professional learning build around the video modules, step-by-step directions for implementation, a research overview and more. Modules shared will focus on strategies that support hot-button issues for many teachers, such as the use of the target language, checking for understanding, and providing effective feedback to learners. #empowerededucator
Three New Resources for Teacher Professional Development and Certification
This presentation will showcase three new free-of-charge online resources available for world language teachers, aimed at promoting both professional development and certification. Specifically, representatives from Occidental College, AdvanceLearning, and HADI-CLASSRoad will illustrate several new online video and multimedia resources now available for Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Portuguese teacher development, as well as a language teacher certification/credentialing website for teachers of all world languages. Developed as part of the infrastructure building initiative of STARTALK, a national world language development project administered by the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC), attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions and sample the materials online from their own portable electronic devices after an introduction to these exciting new resources.
