Field Trips
The entire 6th grade will be taking two field trips in upcoming months. On January 19, we are going to the Milwaukee Public Museum and on March 31, we are going to see the play, Mockingbird, at First Stage Theater in Milwaukee. On Monday (12/1), students were given a permission slip for both trips. This should be signed and returned as soon as possible along with $30 which will be for both trips including the bus transportation. We will need several parents to chaperone our trip to the museum so please consider volunteering if you are available.
Reminders
Please remember to check the Classwork calendar on the Webster Webpage. Daily assignments and long-term assignments will be found there. Some students have bookmarked the teachers’ homework pages so they don’t have to go to the calendars. It’s an easier way to access the calendars.
Students need to remember to bring their assignment notebooks to school each day. This is a helpful tool to remind students of their responsibilities. The school ID is also important for students to have here each day. Chromebooks need to be charged every night. Work time is lost by student if the Chromebook is not charged and they have to check a loaner out.
Book Fair
Thank you for supporting Webster’s Book Fair!
With your generous support, we had over $4000 in sales this year. Book fair profit will be used to help promote various literacy initiatives across our school.Classroom Updates
Math (Timm, Steinike, and Blank)
We have begun our unit on Statistics. You will find information in our math books in chapter 9 and 10. Students should have many notes learning about mean, median, mode, range, quartiles and much more.
Advanced Math: We have begun our study of ratios, rates, proportion and the beginning concepts of slope. We will be using both the green and red book for this unit.
Communication Arts (Juzwik, Rosado, and Vanden Berg)
We are completing our study of the fantasy genre. We will begin our exploration of survival within literature. In this unit, students will learn key vocabulary, as well as the underlying ideas of what it takes to survive in various situations. Students will also write Survival Journals and take part in book clubs during this unit.
Our word study will now shift to recognizing common Greek and Latin roots to gain an understanding of less commonly used words.
If students and parents are interested in joining the Early Bird Book Club, more information and registration is included here.
Science (Skipper and Hermsen)
In science class, we recently finished our unit on the Earth’s structure. In the unit, we focused on the layers of the earth and their composition and state of matter. We also learned about the three methods of heat transfer and how convection currents in the mantle of the Earth cause the plates of the crust to move. These convection currents are the driving force behind plate tectonics which will be the focus of our upcoming unit.
Social Studies (Klotz and Skipper)
6th Graders continue to examine and use the 5 themes of geography. A great way to practice using the 5 themes of geography is to watch a news program and validate a theme focus on one of the reports. Discussing with others the identification of a theme of geography with another person helps one process the theme of geography. The talk time also helps one show validation of reasoning. Linked here is the document students have in their chromebook folder to help parents talk about the reasoning. Click here for another link to check into the CNN student news program. Students can access transcripts to justify their reasoning of a chosen theme of geography they heard or saw.
