Lil Steamer Families --
I hope you enjoy our newsletter each Friday as we share the amazing news from our classrooms, students, and teachers.
However, there are so many positive things that occur each week that do not make the newsletter as well. I would like to highlight some of my observations this week.
This week, I saw…
a teacher console a student in crisis.
a teacher reach out for ideas and receive support from colleagues.
a 5th grade student tie the shoe of a Kindergarten student.
students help other students at lunch with opening packages.
students pick up litter in the hallways and throw it away.
staff rally to help others to offset our current staffing issues.
teams meet to collaborate and identify ways to best support individual students.
teams meet to continue to improve our school.
There are far too many celebrations to list, but I wanted to share a few things that go on behind the scenes that usually do not make the spotlight.
Have a wonderful weekend; next week is HOMECOMING WEEK!!

From the desk of: School Counselor Mrs. Meumann
This week I wanted to share some of the benefits of counseling:
-Counseling teaches children how to effectively manage emotional distress and anxiety on their own.
-Children learn how to deal with anxiety in healthier ways.
-Children have a safe place to talk about their thoughts and feelings. It helps them to share any worries or problems they may have.
- Counseling can help children to build their confidence and self-esteem.
How do I know if I should look into counseling for my child?
If your child seems unusually anxious, sad, or irritable for a long period of time and it’s interfering with his or her ability to do things that are appropriate for kids his or her age, it’s a good idea to seek help.

What are the warning signs that my child may have problems with language?
Language is how we use words to share ideas and get what we want. Language has fundamental skills for speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. Warning signs for a 2 and 3-year-old child include:
- Saying fewer than 50 words by 2 years
- Not putting 2-3 words together in phrases
- Not understanding what others say
- Having trouble playing and talking with other children
- Frustration when trying to communicate
If you are concerned about your child’s communication skills, please contact me by email at lbeveroth@riverbendschools.net or by phone at 815-589-2911.
Good Morning Steamer Nation!!
Mr. Dail, our FES tech specialist, is one of the most creative techies I have had the pleasure to work with. It's even cooler that he's a former student of mine.

How Tall of a Tower Can You Build Out of Pencils?
Students in 2B were challenged to build a tower using only 100 pencils and NO binding agents, such as glue, tape, string, or staples. The students worked in pairs, came up with a plan, and were given 10 minutes to implement their plan. After 10 minutes, a ruler was used to measure the height of their towers. Students had a chance to revamp their plans and try building a taller tower. After an additional 7 minutes, the towers were remeasured. The tallest tower was a little over 16 inches. Mr. Dail’s tower was 22 inches! The students were super engaged and had fun with the challenge, regardless of the results!

Third Grade
Third Grade spent the week learning about bridges and forces!
We experimented with different materials to build bridges: paper, blocks, popsicle sticks and more. We even tested our paper bridges to see how much weight they could hold.
We also learned about Suspension bridges, Truss bridges, and Pillar bridges.
Ask a third grader: Why are bridges so strong?
