Welcome 4th and 5th Grade students Back to the Building

* Welcome back AA students for 4th and 5th on Feb. 8th and BB student on Feb. 11th. There may be some students who show up Monday that are on a BB schedule. They will be allowed to stay in the classroom and we will reach out to the parents to inform them of their correct schedule.


* Double check how students go home. Please walk students to their bus and make sure they get on the correct bus.


* I have ordered 30 apple pencils and will distribute as soon as they are delivered and according to the survey sent out by Kelly Carels. We may have a few extra if you did not respond to the survey.


* Kim Matthews will begin as the long term substitute for Robert Stark on Monday Feb. 8th.


*Substitutes are going to be a challenge moving forward. We have limited personnel at FES to cover classrooms, so please be patient with us each day as we do our best to find coverage for all classrooms. We will do our best to spread the wealth.


* Choice day: We will try to cover choice day as best we can. Please be prepared to monitor your classroom if we cannot find coverage. This is only on Mondays and Tuesdays.


* With all the changes in who is returning, transportation has instructed drivers to pick up any student they see and we will get them registered when they arrive. Be prepared! We may have some students who show unexpectedly! I will have Mr. James on standby if we need additional desks, so just let us know. I have some extra desk shields if you get extra students.


* February 10 will be parent conference day so begin thinking about which parents you would like to see. There will be no CIT meetings that day. Share your schedules with Emily Phillips. Also, make sure you document your conferences for Title 1 purposes and share your documentation with admin.


* February 11 no PK for conferences.


* February 14 Valentine's Day

Valentine's day card exchange is fine. We do not recommend the ones with candy and parties should not happen due to sharing of food.


* February 15 No School President's Day

Help Wanted: Afterschool Program

The afterschool program will resume in-person programming on Thursday, February 18, 2021. At this time we are short 2 staff members. IAs or tutors welcome...

Location: Community Civic League Building, Laurel Grove Road

Days: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays

Times: 3:30pm-6:30pm (flexible start time for school staff)

Duties: Program leaders will lead small groups of students in various academic enrichment activities. Staff must be willing to enforce current health and safety measures; including social distancing, face masks, disinfecting all surfaces.

Timeline for student return

Feb. 1st: Pre-K through 3rd grade Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday; no change to current start and end times.


Feb. 8th: 4th and 5th grades - AA schedule students begin

Feb. 11: 4th and 5th grade- BB schedule student begin


  • Virtual Learning will remain an option for families who want their children to continue to learn at home. No changes will be made to their current schedule.
  • The shorter student day will remain unchanged for all students for the remainder of the school year.


AA/BB Schedule Details

We have assigned students to AA/BB schedules and families will start to be notified this week. Students were assigned to a schedule based on bus routes. 4th and 5th grade teachers can view the FES Phases Qualtrics Document to view their list of students assigned to each day.


I will send out an email to parents this week to notify them of their AA/BB schedule. I ask that teachers also reach out to families to report which day their child will be reporting. You may also inform your students as well. Any changes need to go through office. There are still some students that we have not heard from yet and will need to know if they are coming to school or will remain virtual.


Students on the AA Schedule:

  • Monday and Tuesday in the building for in-person instruction.
  • Wednesday at home for an asynchronous day (same as current schedule).
  • Thursday and Friday at home for synchronous virtual learning (same as current schedule).


Students on the BB Schedule:

  • Monday and Tuesday at home for synchronous virtual learning (same as current schedule).
  • Wednesday at home for an asynchronous day (same as current schedule).
  • Thursday and Friday in the building for in-person instruction.


Families of students in PK4, kindergarten through 6th grade and 9th grade have already completed questionnaires. Anyone needing to change information given in their previous questionnaires should contact the child’s school directly.



The Connectivity Room will be only available to teacher/staff students if needed. Please let me know if your child needs before or after class monitoring as we will utilize Ms. Ramsey in other areas throughout the day.


Only Special Ed students that are currently in the building now will attend all 4 days when students return.


Kajeets Smartspots

Students who were provided Kajeet Smartspots should keep those for the time being in order to have connectivity to their classrooms on their synchronous learning days at home.


Please note:

  • Face coverings are required for all students ages five and over.
  • Protocols for preventing the spread of COVID-19 through cleaning, self-assessment, and social distancing are detailed in the CCPS Recovery Plan.
  • Plastic barriers will be handed out this week to 4th and 5th grade.
  • If you need any PPE materials, please notify Mr. James or myself.

Health and Safety Protocols continue


  • Masks on at all times for staff and students except when eating - and safely socially distanced while eating. All students aged 5 and above are required to wear a mask - including staff children.
  • Socially distancing while outside on maskless breaks and making sure we social distance as we go through the hallways
  • Trying to maintain 6 feet of distance as much as possible. The new CDC guidelines are 15 minutes (at less than 6 feet) over a 24 hour period. This is regardless of mask, plexiglass, inside or outside.
  • Zoom meetings whenever possible to cut down on unnecessary gatherings.
  • Frequent hand washing and hand sanitizing for staff and students; and making sure we are building the time into our in-person classes for this important step to occur
  • One student at a time for bathroom use to reduce foot traffic to bathrooms and avoid multiple students using our facilities at the same time.
  • Social distancing our students in the classroom - 6 feet - with the use of plexiglass as much as possible.
  • Wiping down high use areas in your classrooms that you and students use.
  • Rotating teachers need to wipe down their areas when they leave the classroom.
  • Emailing front office staff when possible to reduce foot traffic through the front office
  • Emailing Mr. James and myself immediately when you need PPE, wipes, paper towels, etc. I also have gloves for everyone this week, so please ask for what you need!

If you don't feel well, do not come to work.

1. Contact (email, call, text) - Briana . She will refer you to #2 if you have symptoms.

2. Email covid19@ccpsstaff.org and describe your symptoms. They will get back in touch with you with next steps.

3. Enter your absence in AESOP/FRONTLINE as a personal sick day. In the event it turns out to be Covid related, HR will change the coding. Continue to enter your absence in AESOP everyday that you are out.

4. Complete the survey sent to you by HR.

5. Communicate with HR as to whether or not you are well enough to telework. Only HR can approve telework.

6. Please keep me posted as to your symptoms, test results, return to work day etc. Please don't assume that we are up to date.

A Message From Mrs. McCormick:

Good afternoon! As we get back in our daily routine, I just wanted to take a minute to share some reminders.


* SEL (Social Emotional Learning)- It is important to make connections with students, check in on them as it relates to their Social Emotional well-being. Be sure to take care of yourself as well. Many resources are available for you and your students if needed.

* Asynchronous Wednesdays are a valuable time for Content CITs, collaborative planning, individual planning, school team meetings and office hours. The breakdown of times is linked here.


* Great Instruction begins with proper lesson planning- be sure to plan each lesson using an equity lens. This will ensure we meet the needs of all students. MABE Equity Lens


* E4L strategies can and should be used during online instruction. LT/SC, Target/Task Alignment, Mini-Lesson, Scaffolded Learning, Teaming and Formative feedback are an important part of every students' success.

* Grading (Reteach/Reassess)- not all assignments need to be entered into the grade book. Remember with a standards based grading policy/regulation, if a student is not successful, we should reteach and reassess. Directly from a CCPS teacher......."I don’t care if you do the math on day one or the last day, if you can do it you are showing mastery."

Plan For Inclement Weather Days

Four inclement weather days are built into the 2020-2021 school calendar. If these days are not used, the school year will end earlier than June 17, currently the last day of school. If more than four days are used, the school year will be extended by the number of days used.

In an effort to avoid using inclement weather days this year, CCPS has developed the following plan:

  1. If a weather event impacts the ability to transport students safely:
    • All students will remain at home for an asynchronous distance learning day (as they experience on Wednesdays). Asynchronous lessons will be posted by 10:30 am.
    • Staff will report for a 10:00 am start time.
  2. If a weather event requires the closure of all CCPS buildings:
    • All students will remain at home for an asynchronous distance learning day (as they experience on Wednesdays). Asynchronous lessons will be posted by 10:30 am.
    • Staff do not report.

Unexpected inclement weather may result in an early dismissal for in-person students and staff. An early dismissal would impact the schedule for both in-person students and distance learners; however, it would generally not have an impact on the school calendar.
