Remsen Elementary Update
September 15, 2020
Just a week ago today, we opened the doors of the school for the first time in almost six months to the students of Remsen. Although the conditions and procedures are very different this year, it has been wonderful to have the building full of bright, young, learners once again. It is great to hear the laughter of students, the sounds of teachers teaching, and to see the friendly faces of our students and their families.
Our first week back has gone well. Since opening day, many small adjustments have been made to procedures, schedules, routines, etc. in order to improve the experience for all. Even at this point, we are making slight changes and adjustments as we encounter unexpected challenges and observe ways to improve on our new, temporary, way of doing school.
Thank you very much for your understanding, flexibility and patience as we continue to adjust and settle into this new school year. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or feedback.

Daily Student Screening
Before parents/guardians allow their child to leave the house, they must screen their child, take their temperature to ensure it is below 100 degrees, and be able to answer “no” to all four screening questions listed below:
1) Have you been in close or proximate contact in the past 14 days with anyone who has tested positive through a diagnostic test for COVID-19, or who has had symptoms of COVID-19?
2) Have you tested positive through a diagnostic test for COVID-19 in the past 14 days?
3) Have you experienced any symptoms of COVID-19, including a temperature of 100.0℉ or greater in the past 14 days?
4) Have you travelled internationally or from a state with widespread community transmission of COVID-19, per the NYS travel advisory in the past 14 days?
PLEASE SCREEN YOUR CHILD BEFORE SENDING THEM TO SCHOOL EVERY MORNING.
IF YOUR CHILD IS WAITING FOR THE BUS OR BEING DROPPED OFF AT SCHOOL, YOU HAVE CONFIRMED THAT THE ANSWER TO EACH OF THE FOUR QUESTIONS ABOVE IS “NO” AND THAT THEY DO NOT PRESENT WITH A FEVER OF 100 DEGREES OR HIGHER.
Please Note: School screeners will also be required to take students’ temperatures before entering a bus or entering school if dropped off. The school screener’s temperature reading for each student is the reading that RCS must go by. The screener will take an additional reading if the student presents with a temperature of 100 or higher to ensure accuracy.
Arrival and Dismissal
The student drop-off line is moving along very well in the morning. Thank you parents, for your patience and help in making this possible. We will continue to keep everything going the way it is in order to safely welcome our students into the building each morning.
Student pick-up is improving each day. I know that the wait time is longer than we are used to. Behind the scenes we are working hard to improve how we organize and line students up for pick-up, and how we call out names and manage the pick-up line. Thank you again for your patience during this time.
The pick-up dashboard signs are very helpful during the pick-up time. If you did not receive a sign or need a duplicate sign for another vehicle or pick-up person please contact the Main Office and we will make sure you receive another sign.
Drop-off and Pick-up Procedures
Student Drop-off
- The school will be opened up at 7:20 AM for screening and student arrival
- Following the designated routes, students will be driven to the gym door located on the parking lot side of the elementary building
- School staff will take the students temperature using a touch-less thermometer and if the temperature is less than 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit, will allow the student to enter the school building
- If the temperature is 100.0 degrees Fahrenheit, or more, the student will be unable to enter the school
- After dropping their student(s) off, parents/guardians will exit the parking lot
Student Pick-up
- Parents/guardians should arrive, following the routes illustrated below, at school at 1:45 pm at the earliest for a 1:50 pm call down of students
Students will be considered signed out from school once school staff visually see the parent or person picking up and then release students directly to the person picking them up (Staff members may request to see an ID if they do not recognize the person picking up)
After picking up student(s) please exit the parking lot.
