End of Year Reminders
Carleton Middle School is a safe and comfortable school due to many reasons. One reason one might assume this is because school administrators, teachers, and counselors make and enforce rules that keep students safe, but it's the students who make our school a great place to be.
Here are a few end of year reminders to help everyone through a very distracting and emotional time of the year. Some of us are very excited to be on summer vacation while others will miss the routines and structures that the school environment often provides.
Make others feel accepted.
You can help other students feel accepted by simply noticing them, making eye contact, and giving a friendly smile. Just saying "hi" can help someone feel like he/she belongs.
Be supportive.
Many students feel out of place, or like they don't belong in the middle school years. Be supportive to students who many be having problems - and reach out to those who seem like they need a friend.
Use peer pressure for good.
Peer pressure is usually seen in a negative way, but it can also be used for good. When students join together behind a cause, or in support of a classmate, others are likely to follow. Earlier this week, one of our students redirected another student in the hallway for horseplay and potentially dangerous behavior. This was brought to my attention and I ended up watching it on our video cameras. This young person was cool, calm, and collected and did a great job of using her leadership abilities for the better.

Academic Push
We started an "Engaged in May" initiative through our PBIS program to encourage students to complete and turn in all assignments in the month of May. So far we still have about half of our students that are eligible for a year end BBQ, Ice Cream Bar, and field day games as part of completing the requirements to earn this incentive. Students have one more round of academic checks next week to make sure they "make the cut" and stay engaged through the last few days of the school year. Great job to the 7th grade class, who has the most number of eligible students as of today.
