Stone Bank School
Reaching Out ~ March 22, 2019
From Mrs. Wohlfiel, Interim Principal
Spring has sprung!
The birds are signing, the snow is melting, the sun is shining, and the sunrises have been beautiful! As we enter our spring break I wish you safe travels, rest, relaxation, and a time to re-energize for our fourth quarter of learning at Stone Bank School! This will help us as we enter our last quarter of this school year, enabling us to buckle down and finish strong!
A shout-out to the following students:
The Southern Lakes Advanced Learner Network Academic Bowl was March 21. Our students placed second in the overall highest academic score! Our Current Events team also took second! Individuals who placed include Jackson Brunner, 1st Place math; Myla Brunner, 2nd Place math; Alan Whitmoyer, 1st Place science; Wade Lindmark, 1st place 8th grade social studies; Rachel Wieland, 2nd place 7th grade social studies. Thank you to Mrs. DeeDee Jacobsen for coordinating this opportunity for our learners to share their work outside of Stone Bank School! Congratulations to all!
Today is the conclusion of our “I Love to Read Month” and spirit week. An all school read kicked-off the celebration March 1. Decorated doors, favorite book characters, tie or tye-dyed clothing, stars, and favorite sports teams filled our halls the rest of the month! Just another great opportunity for our learners to embrace the joys of reading! Thank you to Mrs. Brannon for all of her hard work in organizing yet another 'I Love to Read' month here at Stone Bank School! Even though "I Love to Read" month is over, please continue to encourage reading every night at home.to be part of our Stone Bank family!
This week our PBIS team invited BMX flatland rider and motivational speaker Matt Wilhelm to our school to share an anti-bullying message during two assemblies to our entire school. Ask your children about his message. It was pretty powerful.
I also appreciate the families who took the time to attend our curriculum night that reviewed the reading of MAP assessment scores and our coffee and conversation morning. It is so important to gather to share information and hear from one another as we move forward.
We have two exciting events just around the corner.
In conjunction with the PTO and the Book Fair, grandparents and special friends are invited to have lunch with our learners April 10 or April 11. If grandparents are not an option for your family, please know it is okay for a special friend to attend that day. If you have the opportunity to attend this special lunch, please be on the lookout for those of our learners who do not have a special friend or grandparent for lunch, and "adopt" them for the day … this is the Stone Bank Way!
The PTO announced this week that a Color Run fundraiser is held May 22. Forms went home with students yesterday explaining the event. The students had a little taste of the event at our assembly yesterday. Funds raised will go toward purchasing playground equipment for our middle school learners.
Your voice, your civic duty - our next general election is Tuesday, April 2. At this election you have the opportunity to cast a vote for our school board. There are three seats open; two for a three year term and one for a one year term. The candidates are Kurt A. Prange (inc.), Dan Arnold, Cara Glatkowski (inc.) and Jennifer S. Anderson Warwick.
We are also in the midst of the hiring process of our District Administrator/Building Principal as well as our District Accountant. Look for information after the break about how you can have a voice in the process.
Happy Spring to all!

2019 Summer School
Stone Bank Track Club
Attention all 4th-8th grade families,
The Stone Bank Track Club will again be offered for any students in grades 4-8. If your child is looking for an activity to get involved in this spring, please consider having him/her join Track Club.
In Track Club, students get to be part of a team while working on improving individual performance in a variety of running and field events. Participants can choose which events they would like to do. It’s a fun opportunity to get in great shape and gain experience for future participation in Track & Field and/or other sports.
Track Club begins the second week in April and runs through the last week in May. Practice times/locations will vary between being held at school and using the Arrowhead track when it is available. (These practices will likely be later in the evening - 5:30-7 at AHS). Days that we are at Stone Bank, practice will be right after school from 2:30-4:00. Until we have confirmation about the track's availability, we are not able to give specific dates/times/locations for practices, but we hope to have this information out before Spring Break. There will be approximately 5-6 track meets held at Arrowhead High School. See the attached flyer for tentative track meet dates!
A $20 fee, which covers the cost of event entry fees for meets and a team t-shirt, should be turned into Mrs. Vance before the first practice. After signing up here, you will receive an email within the next couple weeks with more information including practice days/times, as well as the necessary forms that will need to be completed and turned in by the first practice in April.

This year the Scholastic Book Fair will be held Monday, April 8th - Friday, April 12th. The PTO will be looking for volunteers to help at the book fair as well. Happy Reading and we hope to see you at The Book Fair!
Stone Bank School's 175th Birthday Celebration
This year commemorates Stone Bank School's 175th birthday! The attached questionnaire is being used to collect stories and memories from Stone Bank School throughout the years. We invite you to share your memories so that we can then share them with our students, to help them learn the history of Stone Bank School. With your permission, we will post your stories on a Google Site linked to our Stone Bank School website.
Anyone who has been a student, family member, friend, neighbor, or staff member is encouraged to share. Please forward this message to others you think would like to share. The more stories the better! More information will be coming soon about a whole school/community birthday celebration later in the school year. More information to come.
Please submit your responses by April 15th.

Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Holly West's essay:
Holly’s style of writing is clear and engaging. She chooses to delve deeply into her topic utilizing beautiful language and expression. I am excited to see how Holly grows as a writer over the next (over) two years!
What set this piece apart ~
Holly chose to write about Georgia O’Keefe. She expertly included images of the artist’s well known works and formatted them correctly in APA style. Her research was well-rounded and accurate. Nice work, Holly!
Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Owen Smith-Skwierawski's essay:
Owen’s research supported his argument that Thanksgiving should be appreciated more. He inserted valuable quotes to support his well-organized essay! Owen’s passion for his topic radiated throughout this essay.
What set this piece apart ~
Organization was key for this one! Owen has grown so much as a writer over the past 1.5 years. His writing continues to strengthen as time goes on, and I can’t wait to see what he decides to write about next! You’re one sweet writer, Owen!
Ms. Bolinski's favorite part of Bella Jerger's essay:
I loved how logical Bella approached this topic. I think it is easy to show sad images of seals being mistreated and hunted, but Bella used the power of words and research to take her argument to the next level. That being said, she also did an excellent job addressing a counterargument!
What set this piece apart ~
Bella crafted a well-researched essay arguing that Canada seal-hunting must be stopped! She included an APA formatted image. Her argument and support was strong. Way to go, Bella!
