SEPTEMBER 14, 2022 - NEWSLETTER
Hello SLP Schools Online Families,
I hope you are having a great week. Meetings between at-home coaches and learning advocates have been in full swing. We have gained a lot of insight from each of you, and we have been making “tweaks” to weekly schedules and supports provided in response to what we are learning.
We will continue to partner to meet the personalized needs of each student and at-home coach. We also will continue to build routines and expectations that will create a strong online learning experience for students this year. Thank you for your support and partnership.
Here are a few important things to know:
- Follow along with what students are learning: Schoology is the technology platform SLP Online Elementary students use to track and share learning. Parents and at-home learning coaches will also be accessing Schoology to support student daily learning experiences. The newsletter today includes instructions, including videos, for how to use these tools.
- Review and sign – Student Expectations for Behavior and Attendance Agreement: If you haven’t already, please prioritize reviewing our student expectations for behavior and attendance. We’re asking every family in Spring Lake Park Schools to review and sign these agreements. These are available in Campus with instructions in the newsletter. Attendance for SLP Online is recognized differently than for in-person learning, yet it is equally important in the success of students. The same might be said for student behavior expectations. Regardless of the learning model, student respect for self and others is key to building a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. For these reasons, I ask that you please take the time to discuss the Student Expectations for Behavior and Attendance Agreement with your student(s) and help them see how the expectations connect to our online environment.
- Resources to Support Student Learning: If you were unable to come to the Meet & Greet earlier this month, we have a bag of resource materials for your student. These items will support student learning over the next several weeks. Please stop by the Lighthouse School main office anytime Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. to pick-up the resource bag. The address: 7925 Able Street NE, Spring Lake Park
- Attendance: Regular attendance and engagement in learning benefits a student’s academic progress and social development. Students will be marked "present" if they engage in daily meaningful interactions with their learning, at-home coach and/or learner advocate (teacher). Students and at-home coaches will submit a reflection each school day sharing: What did you do to support your learning today? What do you plan to do tomorrow to support your learning?
Please take a few minutes to read the newsletter each week. There will be many items which may be of interest to you. If you have any questions or concerns, please reach out to me. I am happy to help.
Take care,
Kimberly Fehringer

Parent and guardian access to learning: How to log in to Schoology
Spring Lake Park Schools online students use Schoology for their learning. Parents/guardians can also access this platform and follow along with what their children are learning in school. Once a parent or guardian logs on, if you're not sure what you're looking at or where to find something, ask your student to give you a tour!
Schoology is our primary learning management system for online students. Schoology embeds course content, videos, assignments, quizzes, links and more. Parents/guardians can access Schoology and have total visibility into what their children are learning at school.
- If you are logging into Schoology from a computer, use this link. Watch this video to learn more.
- If you are logging into Schoology from the app, make sure to select Log In through your School and type in Spring Lake Park Schools. Watch this video to learn more.
- Check your parent settings and preferences for the year to receive Schoology updates. Watch this video to learn more.
Find additional Schoology information, parent password instructions, and so many more tips and video tutorials about our technology tools on the Technology Tools, Resources and Log Ins page.
School Handbook - Attendance Addendum for SLP Schools Online Elementary
The full school handbook was recently shared in a previous newsletter, which includes important information about our schools’ operations and opportunities within the district for your family. As we create student learning experiences together as a part of SLP Schools Online Elementary, attendance and absences are two areas where practices differ from other schools. Please take a moment to review the Attendance Addendum for SLP Schools Online Elementary.
First Weeks Focus
The “knowing each student by name” part of our district’s vision has been on full display across schools, grade levels and classrooms in these first days of school. First graders made name tags that could hold a pencil, stand on their own, and, of course, had their names. Fifth graders were making iMovies about the “top 5 things to know about me.” High school classes were playing name games.
These first moments, days and weeks of school set the tone for the year to come. After two years of disrupted, pandemic learning, concern for academic growth and emotional and mental health is top of mind for parents and educators. That’s why even more intentional efforts to build relationships and create community are a top priority as a new year of learning begins.
