Updates From Mr. Bucher
A Ceramic Class Experience...
On Saturday November 2nd, Mrs. Boulanger’s Advanced Ceramic students celebrated a day of Raku Firing with Ceramic Artist Ken Vavrek. Raku is an ancient Asian firing technique. The process creates color and texture variations that appeal and make reference to the Shinto-based Japanese aesthetic. The term Raku literally, means “enjoyment” and has been translated as a “serendipitous event”.
Mr. Vavrek has received numerous awards for his Ceramic works of art since the 1970s. Mr. Vavrek was a professor at Moore College of Art and Design from 1970 until his retirement in 2003. He has participated in solo and group exhibitions and has works of art at museums around the world. He has been published in many books regarding contemporary 20th century Ceramics. Locally his work can be seen in the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Rosenfeld Gallery.
Students had an incredible experience. They were able to participate in an advanced firing technique. Students also had the opportunity to spend time, ask questions and gain knowledge from one of America’s great contemporary Ceramic Artists.
101 Objects That Made America
Please join me in congratulating several CB West students for their contributions to a book that is getting national attention. The Smithsonian Institute published 101 Objects that Made America last week to national acclaim. It has been featured on several national television broadcasts. It is now a hardback book as well as a stand-alone issue of Smithsonian Magazine.
During the composition of the book, the Smithsonian Institute asked several hand-picked groups to preview the list and suggest additions, subtractions, or edits. As they hoped the book would be read by all age groups of all levels of interest, they asked Mrs. Lynne O’Hara and Mr. Brian Weaver, Social Studies Teachers at CB West, to contribute with a group of high school students to get their perspective. Only three other schools in America were consulted. I am proud to report that CB West is mentioned by name. I am also proud to report that the CB West students are thanked by name in this new work. This is a tremendous honor for the entire CB West Community, and a great recognition on the national scale of the kind of students that CB West continues to produce.
Once again, please join me in congratulating the following CB West students:
