A BUSINESS/CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ADVERTISEMENT
In the May, 1906, issue of Trotwood’s Monthly magazine, which was published in Nashville, 27 pages (of a total 73 pages) are devoted to Florence under the title, “Florence, Alabama: The Coming of the South.” It has glowing words about Florence’s schools, industries, retail and wholesale businesses, the Tennessee River, etc. Accompanying the lengthy article are photographs of the Indian Mound, Patton School, Muscle Shoals Canal [Wilson Dam had not been constructed at that time], the Courthouse, etc. Of special interest, too, is an advertisement in the final pages of the magazine purchased by Thomas M. Rogers and Benjamin A. Rogers, founders of Rogers Department Store on Court Street in 1894. (See the attachment to this week’s column.) One half of the advertisement, as would be expected, touts the bargains to be found in the store owned by the Rogers brothers. Interestingly, though, at least half of the advertisement reads like a Chamber of Commerce promotion of Florence itself. “Either member of the firm [T. M. or B.A. Rogers] will gladly answer any inquiries about Florence or Lauderdale County,” it says. No doubt, it is that same spirit of civic pride by other merchants and business people that has set the course for Florence’s successes over the years.
