#kindness
During this holiday season of celebration, giving, and family gatherings, I am reminded of the following quote from an author that I love, "It seems to me that no matter what religion you subscribe to, acts of kindness are the stepping-stones to making the world a better place--because we become better people in it." - Jodi Picoult.
Although Jodi Picoult isn’t a great philosopher of science, I do enjoy her point. At New Prospect, we are very diverse, we have our own religions, our own cultures and our own holiday traditions, but something that brings us all together is kindness. I have seen so many examples of this over the past couple of weeks. We have had fun getting ready for break, but we also have become more of a family in the process and all of it is rooted in kindness.
During winter break, we would like for you to remember to have your child read for 20 minutes or more each day. Reading is such a powerful tool for building a child’s mind and we want their great work to continue over the next two weeks.
I hope that each one of you have a safe and joyful holiday season and take time to enjoy your family.

Want your child to learn how to type?
Use Learning.com has been a huge success with grades K-3! All lessons are self-paced, and learning is individualized so that students can re-work a lesson to improve their score. Using fun and interactive videos, K-1 students learned where letters A-Z and numbers are on the keyboard. Grades 2-3 began with lessons on posture and home keys. Ask your child if they enjoyed learning about typing/keyboarding! Grades 4-5 will begin instruction with Mrs. Bercher in January. This resource is free to all families. Directions on buttons below.
Reading Bowl is in full swing. Parents, please encourage your students to read the books on the book list! Our competition is on January 20, 2018 at Paul D. West Middle School, 2376 Headland Drive, East Point, GA 30344. Registration will begin at 8-8:45 a.m. in the gym. Opening ceremonies will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m., rounds will begin at 9:30 a.m., and the event will end by 1:00 p.m. Parents/guardians will provide transportation to and from the competition.
Six Flags Read to Succeed program allows students to earn one free Six Flags ticket by reading 6 hours! The Holiday break is a great time to read 6 hours and complete your reading log (this was sent home last month). There are more forms in the Media Center. The deadline is the end of February.
Morning Announcements: Do you know any good jokes? We are collecting jokes to read them on the morning announcements. Please copy and paste this in the URL: https://goo.gl/forms/6obNyDrXCJmVlC0F3 You must be logged into your Google account to view this form.
During the December Holiday break...Keep reading! This is the easiest way to improve reading skills. Remember to log into Launchpad; then to Mackinvia. Mackinvia has over 1,300 ebooks that are available 24/7; there are numerous audiobooks as well that are fun to listen to any time. Interested in learning more about a topic you learned about in class? Investigate one of the many exciting databases in Mackinvia. You'll be glad that you did!
FC Weather Zones
The Fulton County Schools communications team unveiled "Introducing the Weather Zones". This might come in handy if we get inclimate weather after the break.
