Dear Awbrey Park Families,
Welcome back! I hope you all had a relaxing spring break and are looking forward to an exciting month of April. We have spring pictures happening next week, as well as a first-grade field trip and school-wide assembly happening later this month.
As you begin to prepare for the upcoming school year, please be sure to see the YMCA child care registration dates below, in addition to our newly adopted 2023-24 school calendar.

April PTO Meeting
Our April PTO meeting will be on Monday, April 10th at 6:30pm in Room 16. We have invited Jamie Tait (4J Elementary Math Specialist) to talk about our elementary math curriculum, future adoptions, and some strategies for supporting your student at home.
If you interested in volunteering and/or helping to organize events at Awbrey Park, consider joining our Parent-Teacher Organization! Spring Picture Day!
Awbrey Park Elementary School will be hosting a spring picture day on Wednesday, April 12th.
School pictures can be ordered online at mylifetouch.com, Picture Day ID EVTNG9FTK (see picture packet order form here). Picture packets will be sent home this week and are also available in the school office upon request. Only those students who return a picture packet or order photos online will be photographed.

Student Attendance & Tardy Reminders
There is a strong correlation between good attendance and success in school. On the other hand, students who regularly miss school are also more likely to struggle in school.
Missed days add up quickly: Just two days a month (2 days x 9 months = 18 days/year or 10% of the school year) puts a child's success in jeopardy because students fall behind and disconnect. By third grade, it gets much more difficult to catch up. Students who regularly miss school can quickly feel hopeless, and returning becomes harder and harder (“Why Attendance Matters”, ODE).
It is our hope that we can work together to encourage your child’s regular attendance and success at school. When your child is going to be late or absent from school, please call the attendance line at (541) 790-4054, before 8:30am and inform our office staff. You may also leave a message on our voice mail if you are calling before regular office hours. Please leave your child's name, their teacher’s name, and the reason for the absence.

State Testing Tips & Reminders
State testing will begin the week of May 1st and conclude the week of May 22nd.
Consistent routines are important to student success at school. Nutritious meals, rest and positive communication are essential to supporting your child during this time. Thank you for your ongoing support in these efforts!
State Testing Notice (REPEAT)
Please click on the following link to learn more about each test and the opt-out/exemption process. Families wishing to opt-out of statewide testing must complete the required form/exemption process in the link above and turn it into the school office prior to April 14th.

2023 NextStep Electronics Recycling Competition! (REPEAT)
Have any old electronics collecting dust? If so, Awbrey Park is participating in an electronics recycle competition with other Lane County schools! If an item is mostly metal, has a plug, or takes batteries it counts. E-waste examples include microwaves, TVs, printers, old cords and cables, cell phones, computers, and audio/visual equipment.
Between February 1st and April 30th, drop of any old electronics at NextStep (245 Jackson Street, Eugene) and let them know you are supporting Awbrey Park Elementary School. We will also be hosting our own on-site collection box March 20th-24th near the front office.
The school with the most “e-waste” collected wins a $500 grant and a Next Step Robot made by a local artist. For questions, please contact Kristie Long in the front office at 541-790-4050. Help support Awbrey Park by recycling some old electronics!
2023-24 School Calendar Adopted
Key dates for 2023–24 include:
- First day of school for grades K, 6 & 9: Wednesday, Sept. 6
- First day of school for all other grades: Thursday, Sept. 7
- Thanksgiving Break: Thursday, November 23–Friday, November 24
- Winter Break: Mon., December 18–Friday, December 31 + Tue., January 2 (staff work day)
- Spring Break: Mon., March 25–Fri., March 29 + Mon., April 1 (staff work day)
- Last Day of School: Thursday, June 13 (or later if weather makeup days are needed)
Bike Donation Drive – Free Bikes 4 Kids
You can help Eugene and Springfield children by bringing Free Bikes 4 Kidz (FB4K) your neglected bikes so they can give them a new purpose, helping kids unlock the keys to good health and independence. On Saturday, April 8, from 9 AM to 2 PM, FB4K is collecting bikes at all Eugene Market of Choice Locations and the Willamalane Bob Keefer Center in Springfield. You get a tax receipt, a roomier garage, and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve done something special.
