Fulton Science Academy

Week of October 7, 2019

Dear Students, Faculty, and Parents,

I hope that everyone had a restful, but also fun, fall break!

I along with some of our Admin Team and Department Heads, used this fall break to visit the beautiful country of South Korea. During the trip, we visited the five top schools in Korea to learn from their best practices.

We would like to thank Gyeonggi Science High School, Koren International School - Jeju, YoungHoon International Elemetary School, YoungHoon Internationa Middle School, and Korea Foreign School very much for their hospitality. We are very impressed with the quality of these schools. We will never forget their warm welcome.

It was amazing to see that Gyeonggi Science School even had two observataries and a special research center costing $25 million.

We presented our school to prospective families and we also took time to visit with the families of our Korean students currently attending FSA. Our admin team members and department chairs had an amazing time with the lovely parents of our wonderful Korean students in Seoul, South Korea. We love our families and look forward to many more trips like this in the future!

I would also like to thank all of our amazing 1st grade parents who, right before fall break, took the time to provide our faculty and staff with a delicious teacher luncheon! I know that our staff and faculty appreciate it so much and always look forward to those days.

open house; dec. 8th

We will have an Open House on Sunday, December 8th from 1:00pm - 3:00pm! There is more information to come, but be sure to save the date! We plan to work with student ambassadors who will be responsible for giving tours of the school as well on that day to prospective families.

STEAM Innovation Awards

Please don't forget that we are hosting the STEAM Innovation Awards on October 25, 2019 at the Metropolitan Club in Alpharetta to celebrate the many successes of the school and to honor organizations that support STEAM education in the Atlanta area. Join us for an evening of excellence in STEAM education.

This will be a great inpirational event for our students and families. We have limited seating available and it is first come, first serve. To reserve your sport, please CLICK HERE.

RECAP on VOLLEYBALL SENIOR NIGHT & Middle School Volleyball Season Ends with Big improvements

FSA's Volleyball Senior Night was a nail biter! While the girls played hard and defeated in the first set, they fell short in the 2nd and 3rd. Lots of faculty and students came out to support the team on their special night! Seniors Vaani B., Lizzie, S., and Pragya H. were honored before the start of the game and presented signed balls and flowers from Athletic Director, Alex Ayres. The girls played tremendously!

A Message from Coach Alan on the MS Season:

Hi everyone. I wanted to give everyone a quick end of season update.

We finished the season with 2 match wins vs 14 losses. Anyone who has watched this team knows the stats don't give the real picture, so let me give you the behind the scenes of what we saw.

Remember the first game of the season? Most of the girls couldn't get a serve over the net. Passes typically went over on the first touch and there were no hits. By the middle of the season most everyone could serve over the net and we were able to get three touches sometimes. The end of the season we saw every player was capable of getting a serve over the net. We were usually able to get at least two touches, if not three, and we had a few hits too! We saw the girls come together as a team going from sitting quietly on the bus, to having sing-a-longs. Our favorite part was seeing the smiles and them learn to enjoy the game, gain leadership skills and learn teamwork. We were very proud of the improvement the girls showed over the course of the season.

As we transition into the offseason we would like to encourage all to continue to play volleyball, basketball or any other activity to keep them motivated to return next season. All sports and/or athletic activities build on one another to help learn eye-hand coordination, strength and how to move in general.

We look forward to seeing everyone around campus and hopefully next year for volleyball as well. Open gyms for volleyball begin in July so watch for notifications about this. Go Mustangs!!!

Students trained before school starting at 6:30am. For the meets they had to endure the hot and sunny days. FSA runners also stood out for their true sportsmanship by encouraging other teams at the meet and serving them water at the finish line. Coach Tarik said he is very proud of them for showing up and doing their best. In the final meet there were Mustangs placing in the top 10 in divisions with 50+ runners.

Rivers Alive Cleanup

For weeks Mustang news as well as various announcements and the schoolwide newsletter asked for volunteers to participate in the annual River’s Alive cleanup. The event on September 28th saw a good showing from FSA. A total of 24 participants from various grades took the plunge and joined in to help out mother nature in a bit of “house cleaning of sorts”. The event is hosted by Keep Roswell Beautiful and was at Riverside Park from 8:30-11:30am. FSA representatives divided into groups and cleaned different parts of the park, which included picking up trash along the river and roads as well as removing Privet - an invasive plant species.

The date of the school wide science fair is going to be November 21st after school from 4:30 to about 5:30 pm (depending on number of participating students).

Paperwork WAS due 9/27, and if you want to participate in the science fair, you need to turn the appropriate paperwork in to your science teacher ASAP.

While the science fair will not be mandatory this year, please let your science teacher know if you would like to participate by September 27th so that the appropriate forms can be completed.

It is the responsibility of the student and the Adult Sponsor to evaluate the study to determine if the research will require forms and/or approval prior to experimentation, especially projects using human participants, vertebrate animals, or potentially hazardous biological agents. Students are encouraged to consult with the local SRC/IRB to ensure they have followed all rules and completed all required forms. Failure to adhere to ISEF Rules & Guidelines may result in disqualification at any stage of the GSEF competition, including revocation of awards and honors.

Professional Speaker Series; Sean Reilly

Middle and High School students were ahead of the game as they previewed the observation of World Mental Health Day every year on October 10th. This day is recognized by the World Federation for Mental Health.

Sean Reilly is a licensed therapist and he shared with students the importance of mental health awareness. He spoke to them about good anxiety vs bad anxiety. Mr. Reilly urged students to be aware of their surroundings, especially the people who are in it. Sharing with them that support, kindness and “being a friend” can make such a huge difference. He went on to share with students that there are four things they can do to have an impact on others around them. Make connections with each other, Ask about each other, Listen to each other and finally help lead them to a better situation. By practicing these simple steps you will be an agent of change and help in making the CALL - which means that you can help someone who might have too much going on, cope better.

Home Visits; A Great Activity for Your Student, No Matter Their Grade Level!

Home visits are a casual way for your child to spend time with his/her teacher in the comfort of their home. Teachers enjoy having a chance to see children in this comfortable environment, doing whatever makes them most happy and spend time with children and their parents outside of a regular school day.

Here is some feedback from our parents:

  • “Early in the school year, a group of teachers took the time to come to our home to meet us and discuss the school program with us. That event brought us back to the time in which schooling was a true partnership between parent and teacher and reaffirmed in our minds that FSA truly cares about the development of our children”
  • “We even had two teachers visit us at our home. They were a pleasure to meet and we could clearly see how much they enjoy teaching students.”
  • “Thank you very much for your visit and the chocolates yesterday. We enjoyed having you over very much. I also want to thank you for turning math from the most complicated and somewhat scary subject into one of our most favorites.”
  • “We all enjoyed your visit last night to our home. It was such a pleasure to informally get to know both of you. My son thought it was really cool that two teachers came to his house. He talked about it the whole way to school this morning in carpool. Personally, I admire the dedication you both have for your jobs. It makes a big difference in a student’s attitude toward school. Your visit left no doubt in my mind that FSA was the right decision for my son.”
  • “I just wanted to write on behalf of my husband and I and thank you for visiting our child. He loved having you both come and visit. We appreciate the level of caring and attention that you have consistently shown our family. It is rare to see such a dedication from teachers for their jobs. We can tell that you love teaching and you care for our children. Thank you for visiting our child when he was not feeling well.”

How can I schedule a home visit?

Very simple.

To schedule an elementary school home visit: Simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details.

To schedule a middle or high school school home visit: Simply email sduman@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Mr. Duman will be in touch to confirm final details.

Depending on our teacher’s availability, at least two teachers will be together to visit our students and parents at their homes. The best times to schedule a home visit are weekdays after 5:00 pm, and anytime during the weekends, except Sunday mornings. For any questions you have about this program, send an e-mail to homevisit@fultonscienceacademy.org
