News for the week of January 4th

Winter Theme

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a fun and relaxing time over winter break! This week we will be starting a unit on "Snow". We will be making snow art projects and talking about what we see outside our window during winter. We will also be reading the book The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats. See the two videos below for readings of this wonderful book. The first one includes sounds effects and the second includes a song!

Jolly Phonics

Our Jolly Phonics letter of the week is "J". The action for the letter /J/ sound is to pretend to be jello wobbling on a plate and say /j/ /j/ /j/ /j/. See the letter "J" video below!

4K Traveling Backpacks

Traveling Book Bags will be sent home starting Tuesday, January 12th! Thank to those of you who already responded about whether you would like to receive them. Please send back the sheet even if you choose "no" just so we can double check that everyone has a chance to get them.

If your child receives a book bag on January 12th it is due back by the next Monday, January 18th. That way we are able to check the book bag in and get it out to another family by Tuesday each week. We have 10 book bags per class (am and pm). Not every student will get to take home a bag each week. However, we will keep track and make sure that every student will be getting equal turns taking the different bags home. I hope you enjoy the traveling book bags. The “book bags” are designed to be fun and informative ways for families to share literacy and learning experiences at home!

4K Parent/Craft Night

Please mark your calendars for a special parent/child craft night in February. The craft night will be held on Tuesday, February 9th at the Elementary School cafeteria from 6:00- 7:00pm. All three 4K classes will be combined for this fun event. We will be making a valentine craft and singing a few songs :) We thought it would be nice to have a get together in February when life is a little less hectic than around the holidays. More information to come about this fun event!

Winter Recess

Mondays (starting tomorrow January 4th) will be our 4K class weekly winter recess day. We will be going outside for the first 15 minutes of class. Now that there is snow on the ground if you would like your child to play at recess please send them to school dressed in snow gear (including snow pants and boots) and shoes to change into. If it is easier to just send in a pair of shoes to leave at school just write me a note and we will find a special spot to store them. On recess days it is also helpful for you to send a plastic bag in your child backpack so we can put their wet stuff in there to take home at the end of the school day. Other days (besides Monday) students do not need to wear or bring snow pants to school (with the exception of some students with special situations) and we would actually prefer (if possible) that you not send them in snow pants as it takes a lot of time away from our already short class time. If you have any questions about recess please contact me. Thanks for your help!

*Please make sure that you are always sending a note in your child's folder if there is a change in their dismissal procedure. Feel free to e-mail me as well, however please always send a note. That way if there is a substitute teacher that can't access my e-mail they will know of the change. If you need to make a last minute change (the day of) please call the office and they will notify me of the change.

* January Scholastic Book Orders are due Tuesday, January 12th. Order online at using the classroom code GP4G8 or send in the paper order form.
