Take Responsibility, Always Growing, Better Together
January 27, 2023
A message from me...
Good Afternoon!
Having the ability to reflect on your default behaviors will allow you to have more disciplined responses. Our default is often influenced by emotions, habits, fear of discomfort or push back. Because of this it is so easy to drift to our default. Even when we know it will not produce the outcome we desire.
An excellent reflective activity is to think about your default and disciplined self and think about what does that look like? I will share that "Default Mike" has some really bad behaviors, "Default Mike" can impulsive, defensive, and hurried (to name just a few). When I am disciplined, I am thoughtful, intentional and empathetic.
While I do my best to respond with discipline in every situation, my friend "Default Mike" shows up and I end up getting an outcome that is not as desirable. Because our default is so comfy and safe we have to really practice how to respond with discipline. The more we practice, the closer we will get to having our disciplined behavior be our default behavior.
So how can we practice being more disciplined? There are 3 things you can do right now to start:
1. Press Pause: It helps gain clarity.
2. Get Your Mind Right: Allows you to have productive energy.
3. Step up and take action.
Next week we will start to dig in on some of the nuances. But in the mean time give it a try. It helps!
Better Together,
Mike
Weekly Schedule
DJHS Choose Kindness Month begins Feb. 1st!
February has always been a month that needs some special attention. It is a difficult month for many also believe February is a month of opportunity. To that end February will be "Choose Kindness Month" for Jerome. There will be a number of opportunties for students and staff to "Choose Kindness".
I am a big fan of Steve Hartman. He does a segment on CBS called "On the Road". I watch them often but try to limit sharing because it would be every week. The stories he shares always give me hope about people.
At the end of December, he had a 1-hour special called "The Gift: Kindness Goes Viral".
I would highly recommend taking the time to watch. I would also give him a follow on Twitter: @SteveHartmanCBS
Also this week The Today Show showcased a research study by The Ohio State University that was published in The Journal of Positive Psychology (full document). The overall conclusion demonstrated that performing acts of kindness promotes social connection. Instead of the study you can watch the 3 minute video here.
During the month of February I am asking our Jerome community to commit to 28 Days of Kindness, including our "You Are Loved Week" on Feb. 13-16 (National Random Acts of Kindness Week is Feb. 14-20). I will share more details in the coming weeks but I am encouraging our community to come together for each other!
Construction Update (1.27.23)

The warm weather is helping in some ways but the rain is a bit of a nuisance.
🥎JEROME NEWS AND EVENTS 🎻
School Day SAT for ALL Jerome 11th Graders
Beginning in 2016 school districts in Ohio were required to select and administer a college entrance exam during the school day for the junior class at no charge to the student. The state’s decision to add this assessment opportunity aims to support students in meeting graduation requirements and planning for their futures. It is Ohio law that the District administers a college entrance exam free of charge.
Dublin City Schools will be giving 11th grade students the SAT this school year on Thursday, March 2, 2023. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact your school counselor or Mrs. Hampton.
More details will be shared in the coming weeks.
Student Spotlight: Addie Yang
Student Spotlight: On Saturday evening, January 21st, DJHS Sophomore Addie Yang was invited to play the harp at the Ohio Theatre in the Young Musicians Showcase based on her performance in the annual Young Musicians Competition. Those who score at a certain level of excellence are invited to perform at the Ohio Theater before the Columbus Symphony Orchestra concert.
Addie started playing the harp at age 10 and has been taking private lessons for 6 years. She also plays the piano and can play the guitar a little. She is a member of the Youth Philharmonic of Central Ohio and Greater Columbus Community Orchestra.
This past weekend, she competed in the New Albany Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition and will be competing again in the Young Musicians Competition this Saturday. Good luck Addie! We look forward to seeing your success!

Lunar New year Celebration: Year of the Rabbit
We had a great time last Friday!
DJHS STUDENTS GET CERTIFIED IN CPR & AED
On Friday, January 20th, the students enrolled in Health classes at Dublin Jerome High School were certified in CPR as part of their course requirements. The State of Ohio requires all students to pass a Health class and part of the state's required curriculum is that all students be “taught” CPR and the use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED). However, Dublin City Schools takes it a step further and provides that each student receives a Certification from the American Heart Association in CPR, the AED, and First Aid.

- UMPIRES – We need HIGH SCHOOL AGED umpires (boys & girls welcome!) for the upcoming season for our recreational baseball & softball youth leagues (umpires are needed for our leagues that host ages from 3rd grade up thru middle school). This is a GREAT way to make some spending money!! The amount of money varies by league, age and umpire position (plate or bases) but varies between $ 25 and $ 50 per game. You schedule your own games, work as much as you like. Training provided. To register, just go to www.dya.com

Girls Prom
Dublin Coffman Multicultural Club is pleased to invite all Dublin High School girls to the 2023 Girls Prom on May 6 from 6 - 8 pm at the Dublin Rec Center. This has been a tradition at Coffman for 16 years, and this year, we welcome all girls wanting to attend.
Why Girls Prom? Some of our girls come from conservative families who do not allow them to attend co-ed dances, and some girls are simply uncomfortable at school dances. Girls from all backgrounds come together, some dress up though it's not required, and literally get to let their hair down.
If any female staff would like to attend or help out, you are more than welcome. Please contact Danielle Dehmani-Roberts at Coffman for more details.
Have an Old Camera? Donate to DJHS
Do you have a manual SLR film camera gathering dust that you would love to put to good use? Consider donating it to the Photography department at DJHS! The Photography class explores darkroom photography and could really use more camera equipment.
If you have a camera to donate, please send it with your student to school and have them deliver it to the main office, where there will be a box clearly labeled "Camera Donation".
Direct any questions, such as whether your camera is the right type, to Mrs. Brown: brown_marlo@dublinschools.net
Thank you for your consideration!

CELTS, LEAVE YOUR MARK AT DUBLIN JEROME WITH A COMMEMORATIVE BRICK
With the new addition to Dublin Jerome High School, the commemorative brick patio is also getting some additions… your personalized Celtic Brick. The current brick patio was installed in 2014 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of the DJHS as a gift from that year’s senior class. Who knew that less than 10 years later, we would need the current additions to accommodate the incredible growth in our schools? The original patio will be relocated to the front of the school near the new school addition in the summer of 2023. The relocation allows us to add additional bricks to complement the original memorial bricks.
This is your opportunity to purchase a beautiful, engraved brick paver to celebrate and memorialize students, alumni, school team, club, organization, or your favorite teacher in a meaningful and unique way that is forever set in stone.
Fill out the information below to purchase your Celt Brick and then don’t forget to come to see your commemorative brick during the grand opening of the school next fall.
4x8 bricks are $100 and can have up to 4 lines with up to 21 characters per line (Recommended: 3 lines, 18 characters). All proceeds go directly to the PTO to support all students and teachers at Dublin Jerome.
