Newsletter 2: Anxiety
4/23/2020
Mrs. Wiley is still missing all of you! With distance learning, not seeing friends, and scariness on the news our anxiety and our kiddos' anxiety can spike. If you know Mrs. Wiley, you know I love a good story. Please check out the social story linked below if your children still have questions regarding Coronavirus. This social story does a great job explaining what Coronavirus is and why we have to practice social distancing for a while. I can't wait to see you all again face to face and get some hugs!

Check-In
Check in with your kiddo by asking these questions.
Feelings - Anxiety
Anxious is the way we feel when we worry! Sometimes our face gets red or our heart beats fast. We often worry about things we can't control. Please watch Mrs. Wiley's video to find out how to "ground" yourself when you feel anxiety! Don't worry, it's the good kind of grounding!
Self-Care
This week's self care task is also a great way to tackle anxiety! Go for a walk with a family member and tell them the 5 things you are grateful for! (You may not be within a 10 minute walk of Mrs. Wiley, but Mrs. Wiley is still GRATEFUL FOR YOU!)
Calm Down Corner
Sometimes we need to use the technique of "grounding" to bring ourselves back down from a place of stress and anxiety. I shared in the video above a grounding technique using our 5 senses. You can also use deep breathing exercises, drawing, journaling, ect... Follow the youtube link below for another great video that will help you refocus and calm your mind.
PARENT CORNER
We all crave connection with others. Especially our children. No matter how introverted we are, we at some point need others. There are four elements to connecting: eye contact, presence, touch, playfulness. Please check out the attached document to see how you can use these four elements to connect with your kiddo.
YES YOU CAN!
When we get discouraged try to remember the power of YET and to have a growth mindset! Remember when Ned came with his yo-yo's an taught us the power of yet? Some things may seem impossible now, but if you stick with it you will get there! You can do hard things, RES Hornets!
JOKE OF THE WEEK
Laugh a little. It reduces stress!
-Why did the student eat his homework?
-The teacher told him it was a piece of cake!
