CREATIVE HANDS ART SHOWCASE!
ART SHOWCASE FOR STUDENTS WITH SPECIAL NEEDS
What is this?
An Art exhibit showcasing artwork done by CISD Special Education students. Artwork may be created at home or school, and is to be a student’s independent interpretation of displayable art (E.g., painting, drawing, photography, sculpture). We understand that some children may require some minimal assistance. Artwork may be no larger than 13” by 19”.
Who can submit artwork?
You and your child! If your child enjoys creating art, we’d like to showcase their work! You and your child are encouraged to attend the Creative Hands Art Showcase to represent their artwork.
When & Where?
The Creative Hands Art Showcase will be held on Saturday, March 5th, 2022, at the Bill R. Johnson CTE Center. Mark your calendar!

The Power of Praise
Praise, when used right, can have powerful positive effects on children. This is because praise can condition a child to repeat the praised behavior. Using the right words, praise can improve self-esteem, increase intrinsic motivation, and enhance perseverance. Praise can encourage a variety of good behaviors. Catch your child being good and point it out. Praising them will encourage it to continue. Praising children for sharing, taking turns, using kind words, and getting along with others will encourage prosocial behaviors. Praising them for listening to instructions and following the rules will encourage compliance. Praising a child’s effort will encourage them to keep trying.
Not all encouraging words are equal. Praise and positive attention are healthy when given appropriately. The key is to make praise effective by giving specific praise. General praise sounds like, “Good job”. Specific praise sounds like, “Good job following instructions.” By giving specific praise your child knows exactly what they did right and are more likely to do it again. Here are a few ways to help you make your praise more effective in encouraging positive behaviors.
● Offer immediate and frequent feedback. Offer frequent praise if your child is on task working hard for a long period of time.
● Frame your praise positively. Point out the behaviors you want to see not the behaviors you want to diminish. Never mix praise with criticism.
● Praise effort, not outcome. Praise your child for working hard to get a 100, not for getting the 100.
● Praise sincerely and honestly. If praise is not perceived as sincere and honest, a child won’t feel encouraged. Insincere praise is not only ineffective, it can also be harmful.
● Avoid praising easy tasks or overpraising your child. Praising easy tasks can be perceived as insincere and implies that your expectations are low. Overpraising conditions children to expect praise every time.
