504
February Updates
504 Plans in Aware
Make sure your campus has a plan in place to ensure that your teachers are viewing and implementing updated service plans in Aware.
All teachers should have a "Green" check by their name as proof they understand the plan.
Parent Request for 504 Evaluation
If a parent requests a 504 evaluation, the school has two options:
- Evaluate
- Send a Notice of Denial of Parent Request
I recommend #1.
An evaluation does not mean a student is automatically eligible and requires accommodations.
Can a student be in 504 if there is NOT an academic need?
YES! 504 is about providing accommodations and services that will compensate for students' disabilities so that 504 students have an equal chance to participate and benefit in school programs, activities, and academics. We cannot deny students accommodations because they are making good grades; grades are only one piece of the evaluation data.
Guiding Accommodation Questions
- What are the student's needs?
- Is there a documented deficit for whatever accommodations are chosen?
- What accommodations have been used in the past? Were they effective? How was that documented?
- What does the student prefer with regard to accommodations?
- Are chosen accommodations needed for all subjects areas in all settings?
- What do teachers/staff need to know to properly provide the accommodation?
Do I need to have a 504 meeting if a student i has completed the Take Flight Program?
Yes. The student will not longer be receiving individualized instruction, so his/her paperwork will need to be updated to reflect the changes in services.
Lock your Paperwork
As we get closer to testing, make sure your paperwork in locked, so accommodations will pull into TestHound. Your testing accommodations report in SuccessEd should match your testing accommodations page in TestHound.
Once your paperwork is locked, it should only be unlocked it you made an error in the paperwork. If you need to adjust/change accommodations, you will need to create new documents.
