Report card reminders

Attached you will find Qtr 2 directions . The timeline is as follows:

  • 1/29/16 - Specialist grades must be completed and locked down by 5 pm
  • 2/1/16 - Homeroom teacher grades must be completed and locked down by 5 pm

** Please note: Homeroom teachers can not transfer grades until the specialist deadline has passed. (So, you can not transfer until AFTER 1/29/16 @ 5pm) Doing so before the timeline will prevent specialists grades from being up-to-date.

VB PL Empower "EdCamp style," Feb. 1, 2016

Right around the corner is an exciting learning opportunity created with you in mind! As you know, several schools have come together to host our first ever joint time to learn and grow together based on teacher recommendations.

Earlier I called this an Ed Camp. We have since learned that Ed Camp is a registered trademark name and have renamed our event to VB PL Empower. (PL stands for Professional Learning.) So gear up your Twitter account because we will be asking you to tweet your pics and ahas using the hashtag #VBPLEmpower.

The day will begin and end at John B. Dey Elementary. Registration will be from 8 - 8:30. The first session will begin at 8:30. Everyone is encouraged to consider carpooling on this day because JBD's parking situation is similar to ours - almost non-existent.

On this day, we are asking that everyone wear their Trantwood T-shirts. If you don't have one, please see me. This means you can also wear your jeans. :) For our time together, you will need a laptop or iPad or smart phone.

Our day will conclude at 11:30 and the remainder of the day is yours to do as is needed.

Report Card Comments

Much thought should be given when writing report card comments. Teachers also have the opportunity to use repopulated comments (although, I find these cold and often impersonal). Teacher should provide specific suggestions for student improvement. Statements included should be meaningful, positive, and accurate, yet tactful. Begin with something positive and include achievements earned by the students.

I highly encourage teachers to avoid making statements regarding behavior such as "so and so has difficulty staying on task." If this is an issue, either state this in a positive manner to the parent face to face or add a comment to the report card such as "I will be working to help (student's name) persist to complete (his or her) work."

As a reminder, Ms. McCoy will be checking all editing all comments and will return to you for corrections if needed. Mrs. Z and I will be reviewing all final copies and will also return for corrections if needed.

Technology Tips

UPCOMING TECHNOLOGY INVENTORY – Just a reminder that that ALL DESKTOPS, LAPTOPS IPADS AND NETWORKED PRINTERS must be turned on and connected to the network at least once no later than February 5. This includes all student laptops in carts. Please take the time to ensure that any networked equipment either assigned to you or housed in your area is on and connected (either wired or wireless).

COMPUTER CART – Please do not unplug or remove any chargers from the student laptop cart. Student laptops, when properly managed and returned to carts, will last the entire day. Unplugging and removing the chargers increases the chance of loss, improper charging and more.

GOOGLE CHROME, SCHOLASTIC PRODUCTS, AND STUDENT ACCESS – Due to an increasing number of reports that certain Scholastic products, such as SMI, not displaying properly in Internet Explorer, we are once again making Chrome accessible to students on instructional laptops and desktops. Mr. Fox is making sure while during inventory on Thursday & Friday that google is pinned to the task bar of each laptop.

STUDENT LAPTOPS AND SERVICE DESK TICKETS – If you or your students run into laptops with problems that have been placed back into the carts, PLEASE PUT IN A TICKET ABOUT IT IMMEDIATELY. We are fast approaching the Spring SOL testing window, and we will need all potential testing assets in the best shape possible.
