Teacher Roles
Each leadership role last 9 weeks.
Responsibilities for the leader includes:
- assure the alignment of curriculum
- host all meetings
- lead the meetings
- communicates the needs of fellow students
The Secretary role rotates as well.
Secretary = following leader
Responsibilities for the secretary includes:
- recording new information at meetings
- keeping information organized and updated
Team Rules
- Students will be respectful of each other at all times.
- Students will be respectful of others properties at all times.
- Students will not speak when others are speaking.
- Students are in seat when the bell rings and during class period unless instructed by teacher.
- Students will be given 3 bathroom/homework passes per semester.
- Phones will remain in desk and not remain out during the class period.
- Late students will quietly enter the classroom and sign in with the tardy form at their desk.
Discipline Policy
It is your responsibility to be on time to class. If you are not on time to class, in general, the following steps will be followed:
**each tardie in a class = lunch detention for the day
- 3 tardies in a class = the teacher/office will notify the parent
- 5 tardies in a class = 5 lunch detentions will be assigned through an office referral
- 6 tardies in a class = 3 days in TIPS is assigned (in school suspension)
The process begins again each semester.
MINOR BEHAVIOR OFFENSES
The following types of behaviors may result in a discipline referral being submitted to the administration.
- Repeatedly breaking classroom rules
- Disrupting a classroom
- Violation of uniform/dress code
- Throwing objects (e.g. papers, erasers, etc. that are not an extreme safety hazard)
- Running in classrooms, hallways, or sidewalks
- Being in hallways or at lockers during non-designated times
- Horse playing
- Disrupting lunch room or assembly
- Use of cellular phones or electronic devices during instructional time(items will be held in office until picked up by parent during the instructional day)
- 1st offense – assigned 3 days lunch duty with custodian
- 2nd offense – assigned next step due in minor consequence sequence
LUNCH DETENTION RULES:
- Students must report on time to room designated for all days assigned and sign in.
- Students are encouraged to bring sack lunch or directed to purchase a main lunch tray from the cafeteria.
- Students on free or reduced price lunches will be allowed to get them.
- No talking during detention.
- Students must remain seated.
- Students must bring work or independent reading.
NOTE: Failure to comply with lunch detention rules will result in additional consequences at the discretion of the lunch detention staff or the administration. Generally one day additional detention will be given for each day missed UP TO two days. On the third missed detention, the administrator will assign 3 days of In-School suspension.
MEDIUM BEHAVIOR OFFENSES result in a referral (without a 1st/2nd contract) and include:
- Obscene language, materials, gestures or behavior
- Attendance problems/ditching (on or off campus)
- Defiant or disrespectful behavior
- Bullying (threatening, extorting)
- Excessive horseplay
- Throwing objects (e.g. rocks, sharp items, etc. that pose an extreme safety hazard)
- Deceitful behavior (false accusations, forgery, plagiarism, lying, cheating, etc.)
- Unauthorized distribution/selling/buying of materials or information (principal’s approval)
- Unauthorized calls: Dialing 911 from any school phone
CONSEQUENCES FOR MEDIUM BEHAVIOR OFFENSES
- 1st offense - 3 days in school suspension, parent notification, & contract
- 2nd offense - 3 days in school suspension, parent notification, & contract
- 3rd offense - 5 days in school suspension, parent notification, & contract
- 4th offense - short term home suspension (not to exceed 10 days at once)
MAJOR BEHAVIOR OFFENSES
Major offenses result in a referral (without a 1st/2nd contract) and include:
- Fighting/Battery, regardless of who started the fight (employing hostile contact in which at least one party or both individuals have contributed to a situation by verbal action and/or bodily harm)
CONSEQUENCES FOR MAJOR BEHAVIOR OFFENSES
- 1st offense - 3 days home suspension/re-entry conference with parent/student/administrator
- 2nd offense - 5 days home suspension/ re-entry conference with parent/student/administrator
- 3rd offense - 10 days home suspension/District Hearing with District Hearing Officer to determine if student should return to USC Upstate Middle School
- 4th offense - long-term suspension (up to rest of term) through due process

Parent Contact
All teachers will communicate with parents on a regular basis.
A. Teachers will send home a letter containing academic expectations, classroom
management, schedule, and their communication policy at the beginning of each
school year. The teacher will review this information with parents at Open
House.
B. Each classroom teacher will make positive personal contact with every parent within
the first month of school (i.e. phone calls, orientation, open house, conferences, and
home visits). Classroom teachers will make positive, personal contact with parent
whose children enroll after the first month within two weeks of enrollment. All
parents will be invited to attend at least two conferences during the school year.
Communication will also include interim reports and report cards.
C. Each classroom teacher will develop and implement a system of communication
regarding academic and behavioral performance of each child at least weekly via a
daily agenda, steno pad, weekly progress report, calendar, etc.
D. Teachers’ primary responsibility from 8:25 – 3:15 is instruction. Therefore, parents
wishing to speak with a teacher should send a note to the teacher, call the office and
leave a message or send an e-mail to the teacher. Staff e-mail addresses will be
published in the student agendas and on the school web page. Teachers will respond
within one business day, unless they are absent from school.
E. All conferences should be scheduled in advance with the teacher.
F. Parents are responsible for ensuring that all school records include accurate and up to date contact information including, but not limited to, telephone numbers and
address.
