Principal's Message
What a terrific start to the school year! All the time and effort in August is worth the price of seeing the smiling faces of your children. This is my fourth year as principal, and each September, I look forward to witnessing the emotional and academic growth that comes from the combined effort of students, parents and the Hilton staff. The commitment to children on the part of all the adults in our school and your home, creates a rich educational experience that I find inspiring. I look forward to working with you and your children throughout the year. Thank you in advance for your support, and for sending us such great kids.
Helping your children Succeed - Read, read, read! At least 20 minutes per day!
It's easy to understand why learning to read is important. Furthermore, it is incredibly important for our children. As they grow, they will need to possess strong reading skills to make it through school and into their career. As you work with your child to keep them on track, remember these reasons why reading is important for kids:
1. It expands their vocabulary.
2. It makes them better at it.
3. It helps build independence and self-confidence.
4. It helps them make sense of the world around them.
5. It leads to their future academic success.
6. It enhances their imagination.
7. It entertains them.
8. It improves their grammar.
9. It improves their writing skills.
10. Reading is fun!
The Hilton Literacy Coach, Ms. Alexander, has lots of great ideas to help you improve your child's ability to read. Click the button below to view tips for reading from her webpage.
Building a Culture of Thinking
Over the past two years, the Hilton Elementary staff has dedicated their professional development to the implementation of Visible Thinking strategies in the classroom. These strategies facilitate student engagement, understanding and independence for students early learners. Beginning in Kindergarten students are encouraged to share their thinking through active participation in conversation and discourse. You may hear your children talking about various routines, including Tug-O-War, See Think Wonder or Connect/Extend and Challenge.

Conscious Discipline
Another area of growth being pursued by the Hilton staff is the adoption of the Conscious Discipline program. Conscious Discipline is a social and emotional classroom management program designed to give teachers the discipline skills they need to address the emotional and social issues of children in the twenty-first century.
The Conscious Discipline Brain State Model recognizes three basic brain / body / mind states which produce certain behaviors. Intentional responses by trained adults enable children to access their coping skills. This neurodevelopmental model focuses on internal states first and behavior second. All Hilton teachers and many of the other staff participated in a 7 hour training prior to the start of the school year. We have already started implementing strategies to address the needs of all the children in our school. Click below for additional information.
