Weekly Updates from Big Walnut High School
September 30, 2016
It was another full week at BWHS. On Wednesday, we hosted our first round of Parent-Teacher Conferences and we had a great turnout. We also chose our first Eagle Strong winners of the 2016-2017 school year. As the calendar turns to October, the year is in full swing!

Attendance: Did You Know...
Attendance in Ohio is compulsory for all children ages six-eighteen (ORC 3321.01) or Kindergarten through 12th grade.
Excused Absences: Personal Illness, Illness in the family necessitating the presence of the child, Quarantine of the home, Death in the family… the complete list is in the student handbook.
Unexcused Absences: Oversleeping, Car problems / late ride / missing the bus, Out-of-school suspensions, or Other absences as determined by the administration
Truancy: Students who fail to follow attendance-reporting procedures or are absent from school or a school class without the consent of the school administration will be considered truant.
Chronic Truancy: absent without a legitimate excuse for seven (7) or more consecutive school days, for ten (10) or more school days in one (1) month, or for fifteen (15) or more school days in one (1) year.
Chronic Absenteeism: Missing more than 8-10% of school each year. (15-18 days); includes ALL absences: excused, unexcused, court, suspensions, etc.
Chronic Absenteeism in high school has been shown to impact academic success, graduation progress and, in the worst case, drop out/failure to graduate.
We need your help to make school attendance a priority. We all understand everyone gets sick. We do not want your child in school if they have a fever, they’ve been vomiting or experiencing diarrhea but a headache or stomach ache may be signs of other issues. Talk with your student about the importance of attendance. Stomach aches and headaches may be a sign of anxiety- are they already struggling academically? Are they being picked on by other students? Communicate with the office and monitor your student's attendance.
Please help us Inspire and Guide your student. The first step is making sure they are in school.
