Unami United
April 24, 2017
Dear Unami Parents, Guardians & Students,
7th & 8th grade students will once again be taking PSSA assessments, this week on mathematics. Our students are academically well prepared for these assessments. Getting a good night's sleep and a healthy breakfast will ensure that they do their very best.
Students have been reminded that NO ELECTRONIC DEVICES are allowed in the testing rooms. This is a strict requirement from the Pennsylvania Department of Education. However, we do encourage that students bring water and a healthy snack to the testing rooms. We will be providing soft pretzels during the break between modules on Wednesday. Please also remind your students that they should report directly to their "proctor rooms" Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.
The weather is predicted to be beautiful this week! My hope is that all of ours students get out and actively enjoy the sunshine!
Unami United,
Mrs. Lang
Principal

LEARNING HISTORY THROUGH PERSONAL NARRATIVES...THANK YOU, MR. STEVENS
Written by: Adrienne J. and Emmy R. (students in Mrs. Frederick and Mrs. Christein’s 7th grade English classes, members of the Welcome Committee)
On Thursday, March 30, Mr. Eric Stevens came to Unami Middle School and gave a very emotional and insightful presentation about the Holocaust and his parents’ escape from Nazi Germany. A lot of students were moved by his stories. Other crucial details also highlighted in the presentation were the concentration camps such as Auschwitz and Dachau. He also talked about Hitler and Hitler's belief system. He then talked about Hitler's motives to rebuild Germany after it was destroyed in World War I. As curious students, eager to learn about this time, the presentation offered a substantial amount of information that was both interesting and beneficial.
After the presentation, a survey was taken to get students’ perspectives of the presentation and to see how much they gained from it. Here are the questions and some of the responses:
Question 1- What was the most important detail that you learned from Mr. Stevens' experience?
These horrible experiences caused by the Nazis never really leave people. They just come back again and again, sometimes getting worse. - Tessa M
I never knew about the labor camps and how hard they were for people to deal with along with how they made people feel and act.- Tegan M
Question 2- What did you learn about the Holocaust overall?
I learned that the Holocaust's basic fundamental was hate. Everything they believed in or acted on was based on hate, and getting rid of the Jews.- Jessica T
It was a solution for Hitler to remove all Jews from existence in brutal ways, which led to mass genocide.- Charlie M
Question 3- How did the presentation make you aware of current issues?
Things like this still happen, just not quite on such large scale. Prejudice to certain religions and ethnicities, and hate towards certain people who were thought of as "different" or "strange". Then this leads to things like 9/11,The Boston Marathon, bombings, arson, and other acts of hate. One quote from the presentation said "Hate is like drinking poison and expecting the other person to die."- Tim C
Overall, the students who experienced the presentation now have a thorough and clear understanding of the severity of the Holocaust and its massive effects on people and the future.
TEAM LEGACY ENGLISH CLASSES - "FLOWERS FOR ALGERNON"
In the short story “Flowers for Algernon,” a 37-year-old male chooses to undergo an operation that will increase his intelligence quotient by 3 times its original number. Charlie Gordon consents to an operation that is intended to elevate his IQ from 67 to beyond 200. The results of his transformation are complicated as are the ethical questions about experimental procedures, patients’ rights, and informed consent.
Students have chosen character roles for a mock trial in which Charlie’s physicians and teacher are charged as criminals. Using text evidence and well-drawn inferences, each character presents his/her understanding of what happens to Charlie and why. The attorneys question and cross-examine the various witnesses called to testify. The jury records notes about each testimony given; it is the jury’s responsibility to determine if the medical and educational professionals are guilty or not guilty of negligence, malpractice, or endangerment. This activity requires the use of all language skills-- reading, writing, listening, and speaking--as well as critical and creative thinking.
