Halloween Around the Corner

October is winding down and Halloween is right around the corner. Our Morgan students are getting excited about the upcoming trick-or-treat evening. Some classrooms are hosting fun activities in the morning before the parades and others are working on projects as a class. Your child's teacher will let parents know if volunteers are needed prior to the start of the parade.

Our annual Halloween parade will begin at 10:45 AM, weaving in and out of classrooms, picking up each class to form a long line of Morgan students. The best place to view the parade will be on the play pads outside of classroom doors. We will pick up all classes, then start to drop off as we weave back through the building again, going out one classroom outside door and in another classroom door. Guidelines on costumes, volunteering, and the parade are further below in this newsletter.

The first marking period is also winding down, with November 1 being the last day of the 1st marking period. Report cards will be distributed in paper copy during November conferences. If you haven't already scheduled a conference on November 13th or 14th with your child's teacher, please contact the teacher for a list of available times.

Have a great week!

Power School Help During Conference Night

Wednesday, November 13, 5-7 PM in the Morgan Media Center

Mrs. Felton, from the UCS technology department, will be at Morgan Elementary on Wednesday, November 13, from 5-7 PM in the Media Center to help trouble shoot any issues with Parent Portal and Power School accounts. This is a drop in session for parent support and no appointment is needed.

Fall Coat Drive

Morgan's 6th Grade Girl Scout Troop is hosting a fall coat drive to give back to the community. They are accepting new and gently used, clean coats for their drive. If you have some winter coats at home that are in good shape, but no longer fit, this a great way to donate to those in needs.

There are two bins at Morgan to collect donated coats.

Eisenhower NHS Tutoring

The Eisenhower National Honor Society is hosting a weekly FREE tutoring session held on Wednesday afternoons from 4-6 PM in the Eisenhower Media Center, beginning October 9.

Parents may register their students by submitting a request located on our website:

http://ikenhs.weebly.com/eagle-tutoring.html.

This will allow us to prepare adequate tutors for each subject matter. We ask that parents complete the form by Sunday night each week in order to allow us to organize the correct number of NHS students.

Their goal is to provide a safe and productive environment for both students needing help and our NHS members offering their service. Additionally, a staff member will be on site every week checking in registered students and monitoring the sessions.

Morgan Annual Food Drive

Morgan Elementary participates in an annual food drive for local charity. Our food drive this year will begin November 4 and run through November 22. The class with the most items collected will receive a pizza party lunch from the Morgan Main Office.

The past few years, Morgan has collected more food items than Malow Junior High and other surrounding elementary schools who participate. Let's keep the trend going and donate non-perishable food items for local Helping Hands food pantry.

Annual Mitten Tree Collection

Morgan Elementary participates in a hat, scarf, mitten tree collect each year for donation to local charity for the December holidays. Our mitten tree will be ready to accept mittens from December 3 through December 19. If you see a good deal on children's winter hats, mittens, and scarves, please consider donating a set to our mitten tree for those in need.

As part of Morgan's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention and Support), each week students at Morgan are able to earn 8 Keys tickets for demonstrating 8 Keys quality in work, play, and lunch times. Looking for Lunch Monitors!

Looking for help on Monday, Tuesday and Fridays!

Morgan Elementary is looking for help in the lunchroom! Each year, we are allowed to hire 8 adults to help supervise students on the playground and in the lunchroom throughout our lunch hour. We would like to thank our parents who have already notified us that they will be returning to join our lunchtime this year and are looking for more support!

If you would be interested in helping in the lunchroom, please fill out a lunch monitor application with EduStaff. A link to the application can be found below. You will need to create an account, enter your information, complete some online training modules, and have a background check with finger prints. Then you can work as many lunch days as you would like and be paid for your help!

Several of our lunch monitors also complete additional training in EduStaff to serve as substitute paraprofessionals in our building. If you are interested in becoming a substitute paraprofessional, please use the EduStaff application process below.

If you have questions about becoming a lunch monitor or the online process, please contact Melissa Roth in our main office at 586-797-5800.

Halloween Guidelines and Parade Information

HALLOWEEN GUIDELINES INSURE SAFETY FOR ALL!!!

We welcome moms, dads, grandparents and family members to join Morgan Elementary School for a morning of Halloween fun on October 31st. However, we do ask that you help us ensure a successful and safe day by following a few guidelines….

· Please do not arrive prior to 10:30 a.m. on the 31st unless you are helping with a classroom party. Our students will be involved in classroom instruction up to that time.

· Please check-in at our welcome station upon arrival if you are volunteering in the classroom. In addition, if you are wearing a costume yourself, let your child’s teacher know who you are. No adults in masks please.

· The optimum location for spectator viewing will be outside on the play pads. Our parade will start by picking up individual classrooms then we will finish with a final walk around the building, dropping off classes as we go. If the weather does not cooperate, parent viewing will be moved to the gymnasium.

· After the parade, we will NOT be calling classroom for early dismissal. Instead, please arrange a meeting place outside of the building to meet your child during dismissal. We will ask that parents exit the gymnasium and lobby area at the conclusion of the parade so students may exit the building safely during dismissal.

· The following is an approximate schedule for Wednesday, October 31st:

10:45 a.m. PARADE BEGINS—11:29 a.m. DISMISSAL

HALLOWEEN COSTUME GUIDELINES

Halloween is a favorite holiday for many children. Not only do they love to participate, but they also take great pleasure in planning for the occasion. Again this year, our school is emphasizing “positive participation” during the Halloween celebration(s) at Morgan. As always, we are urging children to model their costumes on positive role models. Book characters, historical figures, period costumes, and folk heroes are all great ideas to consider when thinking of that perfect costume. We hope that children will design costumes that reflect the joy, wonder and imagination that childhood represents.

All of us at Morgan Elementary work diligently to teach children how to solve problems in a non-violent way. WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE CHILDREN DRESSED AS PERPETRATORS OR VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE. This includes props and accessories related to blood, gore, and weapons. On the morning of October 31st, changing rooms and time to dress will be limited, so minimally-complicated costumes are encouraged.

Morgan Green Team--Volunteers??

In years past, Morgan Elementary has been designated as an official "Green School" due to our efforts to recycle, and spread awareness about the environment. This has previously been led by our Green Team. Our Green Team leaders moved on to had career conflicts and the team was disbanded due to lack of volunteers to support the efforts.

Morgan has one parent committed to help reinstate the Green Team and we are looking 2-3 more parents to help support this committee. The Green Team meets after school once a month and includes students from all grades at Morgan, not to exceed 30 students. They design activities such as recycled art, learning how to compost, how/what/why to recycle, and much more.

If you are interested in volunteering to help reinstate the Morgan Green Team, please contact Mrs. Lasky at sue.lasky@uticak12.org so we can get our leaders connected.
