Learner Profile for April: Risk Taker
Madison Field Trip Reminder!
Reading & Language Workshop
Language Workshop and Reading Workshop learners are about halfway through the “Power” unit, where they are learning about how the power of words can be used to make big changes in our world. The book that we are currently reading is called, I Dissent; Ruth Bader Ginsburg Makes her Mark. The children were amazed that she is still a Supreme Court Justice at age 84! Her passion for equality began as a young Jewish girl growing up in an era where she saw a lot of discrimination against many ethnicities and gender. Students will end the unit next week by reading about Malala Yousefzai. As a young girl, Malala defied the Taliban in Pakistan and demanded that girls be allowed to receive an education. She was shot in the head by a Taliban gunman in 2012, but survived and went on to receive the Nobel Peace Prize.
We are also focusing on poetry this month as reader, as poetry has a lot of powerful words and phrases as well. It’s a busy time of year for fourth grade readers!
Writing Workshop
Writers are learning about the power of words in their opinion writing unit. Writers are learning how to craft a persuasive letter, using powerful words and phrases to show passion and determination to a particular audience. Students will be reviewing the importance of organization in writing as well as transitions, word choice, and of course, punctuation and grammar!
Math Workshop
Mathematicians have completed the Geometry Unit with the final standards being assessed; angle measurement. Most 4th graders have become proficient using a protractor tool to measure and draw angles. Next week we will begin a problem solving unit that extends multiplication with the array while focusing on volume. With FORWARD math assessments next week, the lessons will be designed accordingly to keep any math anxiety low or your mathematician!
Questions to ask about math:
Take a look at an analog clock and try to determine the angle measurement.
What is easy about using a protractor? What is hard about using a protractor?
Social Studies & Science
Before break, we wrapped up our economics unit by selling our products at our stores. The students did a great job and there were so many creative products. Ask your child how their products went and how much money they made!
IMPORTANT! Next week, we will be starting a new unit on plants and animals. We will be learning about plant and animal systems and structures. We will be working with seeds and flowers - if there is a problem with allergies, please contact your child’s teacher.
